Tooth Fairy Tooth Necklaces for Pre-K Classroom:  The Destiny of Things, Story 209

These sure do come in handy, one never knows when a baby tooth is going to fall out!

Got this for my daughter's pre-k class as they are all losing their teeth! They. LOVED. Them! Thank you for such a great idea! 

I am so happy to hear someone ordered these as school favors for their daughter's class and they loved them!  I hope this idea continues to pass on and gives many young children from pre-k onwards some tooth fairy fun!

I kept these on hand as a teacher tool for as long as I can remember.  I taught third grade for almost 20 years and these were always a hit, especially during dental hygiene week.  I don't know if companies still pass out little travel dental kits to students, but I'd just add these right with them!

We used to get booklets on dental care, nutrition and healthy tooth growth with stickers, games and puzzles in it.  It came with a toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss and red tablets that detect plaque to encourage more efficient or longer brushing times.

Oh my they sell them!

I remember them looking somewhat like these.

I still have my large anatomical mouthful of teeth and large toothbrush from my teaching days to demonstrate proper brushing and flossing and not quite sure what to do with it.

Anyways, getting those classroom toothbrush kits were an exciting time and discussing how baby teeth will fall out and how new one's come in were a sign of growing up.  

My mom has kept my baby teeth in a shadow box with other little things, like our shoes, some art work and our favorite toys, some handmade and some not.  I would share this with my class and talk about memory keepsake boxes and I would also show and tell my "school" book, which has a class photo of me from each year of grade school, my report cards, medical inoculation records and even some of my teeth!

Interesting how interested my students were interested in that book!  They had to see each photo, see how I signed my name each year, asked what kind of grades I got and wondered who my best friends were!

I also had a Dr.Seuss book called My Book About Me, by Me, Myself.  I had filled it out between third and fourth grade and they would have a hoot over all the stuff I wrote in it!  They would ask me to read the story I wrote in it over and over.  It must have totally been third grade humor because the title was "The Crying Banana" and it was just a few short sentences about a banana that cried because it was about to get eaten and was saved by a little girl for another day.

It was a fun week filled with brushing and flossing in the classroom and taking it all home at the end of the week and demonstrating to someone for homework.  If everyone was too busy, there was always a pet or yourself in the mirror!

I taught at a year round school, so these still came in handy for summertime!

Saying Goodbye:  I have my own stash of these along with the tooth saver treasure chests because I could never decide which ones I liked better or they would like better too and passed out both types!  I have plans on how to use them in my art, but now that my insomnia is gone and I'm catching up on sleep, I have no idea when that will happen.

What I Learned:

1.  I definitely have good memories from my childhood about losing my teeth and visits from the tooth fairy and from teaching my students about teeth and good oral hygiene.  I hope there are at least 500 students out there that remember these lockets with fond memories and plenty more from others who order them and pass them on! 

I could go on, but my time is up today and I'm going on an adventure tonight and need to get ready for it!

An Etsyian asked the age of this piece because her collector friend only collected Thangka's from the 1950s or before and it was to be a gift.  I had no idea of it's age, so that's what I replied back in email.

The next week without another word, off it went!  I was thinking with crossed fingers quietly in relentless hope that maybe it wasn't from before 1950s and it would return, but it didn't. So now I presume this sits happily with a collector friend of Thangka Tangkas!

Maitreya, Bodhisattva (Tibetan: cham pa. English: the One of Love), currently residing in the Tushita heaven, the next Buddha to appear in the world

Peaceful in appearance,he gazes forward with a beautiful countenance. The black hair is piled on the top of the head, like three crowns. The first pair of hands placed at the heart are in prayer, as a teaching gesture. The other upraised at the side holds a mala of prayer beads. The fourth holds a lotus blossom delicately between the fingers, indicating wisdom.

Adorned with a red aura, earrings, necklaces, bracelets and anklets, he wears a krishnasara turquoise edged silk robe. The legs are folded in lotus posture atop a moon disc, turquoise clouds and gold lotus seat surrounded by gold radiant light. Gold writing and designs appears to adorn the edges. The main bodhisattva is surrounded by smaller ones in different positions as if giving out instructions to those who want it. Most of the background has designs and writings in gold gilt

approx: 39" in length from the middle and 29" at it's widest part. Tibetan Buddhist ritual art, this one from Tibet or Nepal, hand painted in fair to good condition, with ripples and vintage wear on the image from age and being rolled and wrapped and unwrapped many years due to instructional use from traveling monks. Beautiful old tapered thangka in contrasting reds and turquoise paint along with green and orange cloth, looks like silk to me, but I am not certain.

Classic image of Buddha, in traditional Buddhist iconography, with brocade borders sewn onto the fabric painting. There is fading or loss or gold gilt where it was rolled the most, mainly towards the middle edges of the paining and creases on the brocades as well from storage.

Additional Information about Tibetan Thangka:

1. Originally, thangkas became popular among traveling monks because they were easily rolled and transported from monastery to monastery. These thangkas served as important teaching tools depicting the life of the Buddha, various influential lamas and other deities and bodhisattvas.

2. Thangka in Tibetan language, is a kind of religious scrolled painting, embroidery, brocade, tapestried-fine silk and/or applique, mounted in colorful silk or satin and displayed for worship.

3. The art covers a wide field comprising all the Buddha, Bueddhisattvas, Dharmapalas and doctrines and teaching of Buddhism. It also touches many other fields such as history, politics, economy, culture and social life of Tibetan nationality, etc.

4. Thangka is a behaviour of converting to Buddhism and worship and the aim of Thangka is not for the art's sake to express the imagination and creation or the persuit of the artists, but for the inspiration of the respect and worship to the Buddha from the believers. Therefore, Thangka can not be created out of the artist's will,but can only be created according to the religious rules and regulations. Thangka is an exclusive art and most important art category of Tibetan Buddhist.

Saying Goodbye:  I do have issues with letting go of gifts, but this one I could never decide how to display and didn't want to alter it to hang it up, so it was kept rolled up in a box.  Some old things aggravate my allergies and some don't and I have no idea why.  

This piece did not help my allergies and although I could not keep it I am feeling quite melancholy about it's loss today, but I'm sure in six months to a year I most likely will not remember it.

What I Learned:

1.  I need to be more thankful that this went to a collector, since I'm sure he knows how to take care of it properly and display it without altering or damaging it.  Also I should be the fourth person who derives happiness from it.  Logically I can't use it, nor was it helping my health due to allergies or spiritually by being stored in a box.

First it left to someone kind enough to give it to her collector friend as a gift.  Secondly, it's now with him and getting enjoyment in someone's collection.  Thirdly, Mr Oz is glad that one more thing is out of the house!  Lastly, that even though I have raw feelings of loss over it now, I don't think they are going to last for long and definitely not as long as I focus on my long term goals of  a Minimalist Organic home with a Music Art room rather than stored hoard!

See the rose patterned carriage bedding?  I made that when I was about 8 years old for the caco twins.  For some reason I had to have the twins and the carriage.  They didn't match the doll house family I had, but I didn't care and everyone just seemed to fit right in together!

 

As a matter of fact, not much in my doll house matched and none of that bothered me.  Here's the rest of the family:

It was pretty traumatic when they left too, but they came with a story and an update photo, and the Grandmother who ordered them, stole away during Christmas just to take a photo of  the little girl in her new bed and send it to me Christmas day!  So that helped tons to bring more joy over the pain knowing it's with a little girl who loves the same green and pink I did as a child, read and see the story, here.

 

I still don't really know why the loss of these are so upsetting to me and in this moment my mind is so clouded and muddled I really can't fathom a reason.  I haven't been grounded the past week or two and quite frankly just feel exhausted and a recluse.

 

Hmmm... the word, "recluse" just popped into my head and I don't even know what it really means, so I had to look it up.  There are many definitions, some more harsh than others, so here is the one that best describes me right now, "Recluse:, a person who lives in seclusion or apart from society, often for religious meditation."

 

I suppose mine would be for hoarder meditation, so I can get back on track....I thought I was peeling back the onion and getting closer to the core, but right now I feel stuck.  Stuck not quite in a bad way, nor good way, just stuck on middle ground somewhere neutral and in limbo.  Maybe a type of resting vacation to draw strength to move forward again.

Saying Goodbye:   So there's a couple out there collecting the most amazing toys for their future grandchildren!  I think that's the coolest!  I imagine them with a classic toy box that's kinda like a hope chest, but instead of it being for a daughter's wedding, it's filled with fun for their grandchildren!

That thought helps me because it allows a box of hope for anyone's future, not just mine as a recovering hoarder, but all kinds!  Something like an emergency survival kit, but more fun, more like getting prepared for the anticipation for a bigger than big dream to come true.

What I Learned:

1.  The next couple of weeks or months, I need to focus more on my immediate health.  I do have my own kind of hope chest almost full to help with my health.  Plus, I'm going back to my healthy diet of mostly vegan during the week and some three day juice fasts.  I'm going to make time to sit outside for lunch and enjoy the sun on my face.  I'm planning on taking at least one day a week eyebombing walks to turn some city eye sores into googly eye street art!

I think those goals are short and sweet for the next couple of weeks and quite doable for me.

What are your short terms goals for the near future? and which dream will help you decide what to fill your hope chest?

I started this blog posting on April 23, 2014 and it got lost in all my other draft postings and was originally posted as story 188, but my draft area has turned into a diary journal of some sorts and since I'm techless different writings are getting mixed up with posting drafts and quite frankly I'm not sure how to organize them!

Oh well, another thing to put on my list to learn later.  Here is the wonderful email I received:

I hope you remember me. I bought that nicho from you last summer, and you sent me the most excellent letter with it. It really brightened my day, and I really wanted to answer it, but I had a sad thing happen to me and I didn't know how to answer you without saying something weirdly morbid or whatever. I still might, but I wanted to acknowledge your note before too much more time passes. So you know, I planned to make a little nature shadow box with some of my dead flower and plant collection.

Okay, I totally understand this person!  I have sad confusing, sometimes conflicting or disturbing things happen to me too and have a hard time filtering what I might blurt out at any given time!  Also these instances might take days to weeks for me to sort and process and I don't know what to do about it!

Some things are probably not even worth processing and best to just move on and not remember them, but I think that's why I'm a hoarder.  I'm not quite sure what's important and what is not.  And throw in some stress to hoarding as stress relief and it can mix into OCD, obsessive compulsive disorder and FOMO, fear of missing out.   Yikes!

Hoarding is like my tangible journal of things, albeit without any organized linear timeline because if I stopped and analyzed everything I experience, I'd never get out of my head!  I wonder how it transferred into "things."

So there it is, another clue to my hoarding ways!  What to do about it?  I have no ideas, except to keep moving forward as best I can, even if moving forwards means taking teeny tiny baby steps and at times of overload moving backwards in great leaps.  It's like a game of "Mother May I,"  however as a child I preferred, "Green Light, Red Light!"

I've debated which California desserts I'd like to live during spring and fall, when it's not too hot or too cold.  The desserts I've considered are Anza Borrego, Palm Springs, Joshua Tree, Death Valley, Mohave, Pearblossom, Palmdale and Lancaster that order from favorite to least favorite.

Watching the movie, Obselidia rekindled my love of the dessert and one character lives out there in a very minimalist manner with very little and his bees.  It's really about a man who is making a kind of dictionary of the obsolete and who perhaps believes love is obsolete for him too, but finds something in himself and others by taking a road trip to the dessert.

If you've ever wanted to go on a road trip to Death Valley and see some of the historical, kitsch and other notable locations, plus the bonus of seeing The Museum of Jurassic Technology in Los Angeles without going or want to see what you might see if you do go, then this movie might be for you!

I watched it when it was available on netflix.  If you can't watch the movie, some photos of the museum, on wiki, here or go to their link here for visiting hours and admission costs and/or shop at their museum online.  I haven't been there because it's gotten mixed reviews and it may be too musty for me and my allergies.

Saying Goodbye:  During the 80s- 90s, I was a big fan of Religious Mexican folk art.  I had a large window box area at home and collected many of these shadow boxes, milagros and other art pieces to arrange as vignettes each week with a vase of fresh flowers.

 

I also had big plans for them to make into my own art, only to end up allergic to them.  However, I did make other religious Mexican folk art during that era!  Most of it can be seen here at The Destiny of Things or do a search at any of the four shops using either Day of the Dead or Mexican Folk Art and who knows what you'll find, but you will find something interesting!

The Garden milagro cross was inspired by my black thumb!  I am from fourth or fifth generation farmers and can't grow a bean to save my life!  I've tried and tried on and off all my life, but the milagro cross did provide a sorts of small miracles! 

Long story short, I have maintained a small garden of fruit trees, beans from seeds my family used to grow on their farms, chilis (another farm from my mother's side), basically a salsa and salad garden to eat from year round.

The Garden Cross represents many things for me with milagro and sterling charms (small miracle ex voto like charms) to remind me to stay steady with the ebb and flow of seasons.  At each end is a reminder to take my time, with a snail to remind me that everything,even bugs that bug are connected and part of an eco system and a bench as a symbol to rest, smell the flowers and everything happens in it's own time.

I have corn and wheat to represent fertility and abundance.  I have a rodent that actually has taken some bites out of the cross as a reminder that even disasters have a silver lining and even dandelions aren't weeds because the younger tender leaves are a good source of calcium, rich in iron, high in Vit A and C, aids in liver detox, helps purify your blood, settles digestion and on and on!  Plus they taste great in a green drink or smoothie, salads and stir fry!

I love dandelion wishes and although they may be a nuisance to most pristine lawn owners, they do belong to the Sunflower family with over 22,000 species with siblings like the daisy and thistle!

This was made for my brother and we made it together.  Well, we designed it together because actually we made all the crosses together.  He made all the crosses, I did the rest.  There are several more of these crosses some where n the hoard, a "Drive Safe" cross, "Housewarming" cross and a large plain one that I was going to make into a "Cross Cross" with lost of different crosses on it.

He had just gone through a bad bad awful break up and we hung this on his wall as the Lovers Cross and lo and behold he met someone and now they've been married for over 10 years!  He insisted on the peace sign.  I can't remember why.  I insisted on another heart, but since it was his cross for love I gave into my own aesthetics to abide by his!

The crosses above were through the 80s to 90s.  Below is one my latest pieces due to my love of hearts, doilies and rhinestone crosses!

I call it, "Hannibal Heart" because it's the remnant of what was left of the doily I used

and reminds me of the remnants of twisted weird love they ended up sharing and the deer antlers in Will Graham dreams, but instead of a deer it's antlers on a heart doily,

What I Learned:

1.  Well, well, well, I was wondering if this was going to happen and it kinda did....I waited over 3 years to become unallergic to my sterling and my other metal collections and never did.  So I finally decided to let them go and was wondering if once I did my allergies would disappear and in some ways they have!

Now that all of my copper and tin nichos are gone, I am not allergic to them now!  As in touch them allergic, so I bought some more!  I know it may sound a little crazy, but I found 8 heart nichos all exactly the same, so I bought them all for my repetition art of loteria cards!

Now that most of my Native American jewelry is gone, I am not that allergic to sterling anymore, but don't even bother with jewelry.  I have tried to wear some, but take it off within five minutes because jewelry just feels funny and in the way now.

Can you believe that?  and how does that happen?  No ideas here, but in the back of my mind, I did think it might happen!

A story without a story from January 2014!

Around December 2013, Mr. H bought all of my beaded bangle bracelets and one without beads.  I was hoping these would return with a story, but they didn't, but one came from me anyway!

In college I bought a ring at the Pasadena Rose Bowl Swap Meet just like the bracelet without beads, but it had "Haiti" woven in into it.  I love it to pieces, figuratively and literally!

I loved that ring and wore it all the time.  Mostly for it's beauty and the mind boggling notion of someone taking the time and know how to weave in "Haiti." I wore it until it was practically fully unwoven and I could no longer repair it with glue.

Now that this memory has come forward, I think I unconsciously bought the bracelets with that connection lost in my mind until today.

However, I bought the bracelets on Olvera Street at Pueblo Historical Monument at a little stand in the 80s during a school field trip when I was a new teacher in Los Angeles.

 This is some what of a photo of how I remember Olvera St, but I haven't been there in ages.

The last time I was there was perhaps five years ago and it was so crowded and hot 

that I got a Tamarindo drink, went straight back to my car, thanked God for a/c and went home.

Olvera Street was my first class field trip as a teacher and supervising is not easy in this large uncontainable area with 30 students running around and I was so nervous the entire time.  It was crowded and noisy and I kept counting my students over and over thinking I was going to lose one of them in the crowds.

Eyeing the bracelets and buying them took my mind off of of my worries for a few minutes and I felt better with them.

Now that they are leaving, I've decided to keep the other three, and perhaps I'll actually wear them this time knowing that they give me peace of mind.

I am still wondering if they are from Haiti and if they are how they got to Olvera Street.

Saying Goodbye:  Today is Tuesday, June 3, 2014, It's been almost six months since I last started this posting and I did have the bracelets set on my tansu to remind myself to wear and I did put them on and I wore them for less than 5 minutes!

Wearing jewelry just feels weird to me now.  Heavy and in the way, like an annoying distraction!  Well, I can't believe I just said that!  I am or was such the jewelry hound!  Jewelry was my favorite accessory!

Not anymore, now I'm jewelry-less and fine with it.  I haven't worn jewelry for over ten years when I gave it up for Lent due to my teacher Catholic friend asking me what I was giving up each year, it was kinda like a running a joke that I actually practiced.  One year it was my watch and the next year it was jewelry.

Sometimes I was caught off guard with the question and other years I had an answer all ready!  I first gave up double chocolate chip cookies from the school cafeteria at recess break.  They were huge, probably like 10- 15 cookies in one!  I ate one daily five times a week!

The next year I gave up sugar.  I mean, it's only 30 days.  I felt so much better after giving up sugar and quite frankly it was easier than I thought to do, so I never went back.  I gave up swearing and cussing, carbs, television, beer, wine, then any alcohol, fried foods, new clothes ( I only bought second hand clothes) and every year when I remember, I do give up something for Lent, even though I'm not Catholic.

This year I gave up fried foods and tried juice fasting Tues through Th, eating vegan, except for Friday, but instead of eating fish ate organic free range chicken.  I've tried the vegan route (I was a raw vegan for over 2 years) and I just can't survive on it and feel good.

What I Learned:

1.  I'm having difficulties staying on topic after a time consuming bottom less pitt exciting fun filled few weekends that took up a lot of my energy and left me feeling stressed, exhausted, wiped out with muddled cloudy thinking. 

I'm learning to pace myself and take care of my needs and wants and make things a win win situation for all, including myself because I tend to overlook, postpone or forget about me .

2.  As a recovering hoarder, there are things I love that I'm just not going back to no matter how much I love them, like jewelry, even non metallic jewelry that I'm not allergic too.  At this moment, as a recovering hoarder this seems confusing to me because I just love jewelry!  All jewelry!

3.  I need a lot of rest and down time from situations that overexcite me in more ways than one and perhaps as a recovering hoarder, I need more "set" boundaries than I imagined.

How do you stay grounded?  I'm not so good at it and tend to get carried away with others enthusiasm, ideas and even their problems!

Thank you Etsy buyer from VintageToGoEasy for not leaving me a story, but getting one anyway from myself.   This has only happened a few times, but maybe it's a sign that my mind is uncluttering due to dehoarding.  Does this mean, soon I won't need other people's story to trigger mine?

Saying Goodbye:  Well, well, well..... In the past month, I've never seen so many creative uses for googly eyes ever!  Between EyeBombing City Eye Sores and googly eyed bras for Electric Daisy Music Festivals, I am googly - eyed myself!

What I Learned:

1.  It doesn't hurt to ask for a story because there are plenty of people out there willing to help me with mine by sharing theirs!  Nor have I seen anything so creatively made with these neon ones and the classic black and white ones!  I used mine in the classroom in many ways, but nothing as zany and exciting as my two Friday stories!  Read EyeBombing City Eye Sores from another artist here.
