Little Mermaid Themed Party: The Destiny of Things, Story #248

Little Mermaid Themed Party:  The Destiny of Things, Story #248

An excited Etsy buyer sent me an email story yesterday!

Here is the note I recieved:

I'm throwing a big "Under The Sea" party for my daughter who's turning 6 and I'm serving an Ursula-tini for all the "Poor Unfortunate Souls"(Adults) and "Mermaid Potion Punch" for the kids that want to grow a mermaid tail for the party ;) So I'm going to drape them into the glasses I have to make them look like they are floating in the blue martini's and punch. Should look super cute, and I know the kids and the adults will find it neat....at least I hope ;)

How fun! a little mermaid party with magic drinks that include a little mermaid swimming around!  This order was a request for green and blue mermaids only! but I had to add a little reddish neon mermaid for the birthday girl!

I could use one of those Ursula-tini's right now! Floating in in some blue cool water sounds so relaxing!  It's been a long week over here for one poor unfortunate soul and I'm so thankful it's Friday!  I hope they work their magic at the party!

Here's what little mermaids look like draped inside or outside a glass.  And what some look like when they've had a little too much Ursula-tini water!

My cocktail mermaid collection started from my childhood and was revived in the 80s when I got into Mexican religious folk art and started to make art with loteria cards.  One of my favorite loteria cards was/is "la sirena."  I'd prop one of these on the nicho door when it was open.

And when I found the band, Los Super Seven, La Sirena became one of my favorite songs of theirs, it still gives me goosebumps!  Every single song on their first album is tremendously good!  The CD comes with the lyrics in Spanish with an English translation.

Every Sunday morning I'd blast their CD while reading the morning paper in the backyard sun or while making my own style of Mexican folk art.

I made my own nichos out of cardboard and put my mini loteria art in them because back then I could only find nichos in San Diego or Tijuana.  Even finding the loteria cards from the game wasn't easy to find back then.  Now nichos are very popular and so is the loteria game.  I have pictures and perhaps a leftover cardboard nicho in my hoard some where!

Many of my friends and family borrowed them and they were never seen again!  Most of my Tijuana and San Diego nichos from that era sold last year, but there are still a few Mexican Religious Folk Artifacts available at VintagToGoEasy, here.  Also, some of my new loteria art in nichos are included in the mix.

Saying Goodbye:  Back in the 80s, all the way til now, these were very difficult to find and I could only find them used vintage for a pretty penny.  My favorite ones are the red mermaids and are very rare to find!

Even when a kind Etsy seller from Antqnjwlry gave me his entire vintage collection of over 100 to 200, only 4 of them were red mermaids!  I won't ever part with that batch!

What I Learned:

1.  Well, I never would have thought these mermaid cocktail drink charms would ever be as popular as they seem to be now!  I've sent them out to all different kinds of themed weddings, birthdays and just to people who keep them on their shelves for nostalgia sake!
Now if I ever find red ones I can splurge on them!  Except the vintage ones still cost about a dollar a piece! Yikes!

2.  Not only have these been used in their traditional ways as drink ornaments for adults and children, but they've been used as cake and ice cream toppers too!

3.  It seems that now many of our popular Etsy items fund some of my more expensive art supplies, so that seems to be part of the silver lining to my hoarding ways!

Which cocktail drink ornament was your childhood favorite?  Mine was the mermaid and my brother's was the monkey.  I loved the elephant too and wore mine as a necklace!

Here is a sample of other drink, cake and ice cream toppers, available here

Thank you Etsy buyer for making my day yesterday.  It's been a crazy week and even crazier with insomnia and a California heat wave is back!  Your email brought some cheer and inspiration to keep me motivated and focused on my Hoarder Rehab!

Note to self:  Write about how my insomnia increases my need for window shopping to stay awake and how the hoarding cycle isn't very far away again!

Thank you Etsy for your continued support as the best dehoarding outlet ever!

Thank you France, US, Ukraine, Austria, China, Mauritius and many others for your continued support of my HoarderRehab and The Destiny of Things!

My new goal is to list at least 200 items from my hoard on each shop by mid October for the Christmas season!  I've already met that goal at The Destiny of Things and Hoarder Rehab!  I'm going to try and list new hoard daily at each shop until I reach my new goal.

Click on the shop names to visit my new hoard listed daily: HoarderRehab with 205 items, The Destiny of Things- 205 items , VintageToGoEasy - 195 items and now JunkDrawerLoveEtsy - 188items!

Maybe you'll find something to take home and share your story too!  Thanks for looking!

Here is a gathering of some of my own creations as an alternative to hoarding!
