Unicorn Poop aka Glitter Slime in Gumball Capsules:  The Destiny of things, Story 437

Unicorn poop?  Glitter slime?  Gumball capsules?  What?

Here is the fun note I received:

My 8 year old daughter is pleased to have received her little gumball capsules.. She uses them to fill with her home made Unicorn poop (AKA glitter slime) lol She makes the slime herself then packages them up in these capsules and sells them at school.. Don't tell her teacher... 0= She is a little entrepreneur.. Thank you for your fast shipping and friendly manners.. (=

So cute and clever!  Do we have a little Etsy entrepreneur in the making?  I think so!

Hmmm.... I have no idea what unicorn poo or glitter slime looks like, but if I had to guess, it might be something like Oobleck?

Oobleck gets its name from the Dr. Seuss book Bartholomew and the Oobleck where a gooey green substance, Oobleck, fell from the sky and wreaked havoc in the kingdom.  I'd read it to the class after lunch recess and then we'd proceed to make the mysterious goo and have a debate!

I used to make it with my third graders in the classroom as a classic chemistry science lesson of making a solid into a liquid, but in this case, is it a solid or liquid?

Saying Goodbye:  I am so grateful others enjoy empty gumball vending machine capsules as much as I do!  I use them weekly to package and ship out jewelry and other small items from our shops.  A lot of empty ones ship out too to all the creative Etsy buyers out there using them!

What I Learned:

1.  Some of my hoard has become popular enough to keep reselling!  Which I call rehoard.  So my little experiment of letting go of my hoard by selling it has turned into a little hobby, which has in turn become a full time job with part time pay, so I am rethinking it all.

2.  Now that about half my hoard have found new lives and homes and I've relived giving stuff up over and over again.  Some more painful than others with lots becoming less and less painful with each practice.

I still haven't figured out why I hoard, but I certainly have gained some clues to the mystery and in the process have certainly changed my hoarding habits and have become more conscious of my hoarder way of thinking.

So maybe the reason why I hoard isn't as important as changing my thinking towards hoarding.

3.  My new challenge with my hoard is how to make this work while only putting in part time hours because now, it is no longer so much of a Hoarder Rehab for me and I am no longer willing to put in full time hours for part time pay, now that I'm more in tune with Etsy and am no longer so attached to my hoard.

So what's next?  I have no idea, but I'm always experimenting, especially to see how Etsy and my hoard work together, so my next experiment is to only dehoard with Etsy on a part time basis, so I can find my next adventure!

I am so excited!

4.  However, I have found I am addicted to my time on Etsy and will need to slowly tear myself away from it as painlessly, effectively and mindfully as possible.

So fun for all ages!  Just take the cellophane fish out of the bag and place the fish in the palm of your hand and it will tell your love fortune for the moment by moving in a certain way or not moving at all!

Then turn the bag over and on the back, depending on how your fish moved or did not move it will tell you what the fish movement means for your love fortune!

That's the cutest Valentine ever!  "Of all the fish in the sea, I'm glad your friends with me!"  with a little cat going fishing!

Also, one of my favorite things during Valentine's and Halloween in the classroom were the treat bags from kids!  I still love the old time graphics on the treat bags too!

Saying Goodbye:  I love the idea that this mom is passing down her love of her childhood fun items to her daughter and a whole classroom full of the next generation.

I use mine all the time as holiday fun card inserts, gift wrap toppers and "thank you" packaging from all our shops.

What I Learned:

1.   I used these in the classroom to introduce magic themed teaching, which was really science and math. even these fish have a scientific reason to how they work!  It may take all the magic out of it, but then again, maybe the word, "magic" really is just a word used for things we can't explain or understand yet.

2.  Another hoarded item that has become a popular item at all our shops.  It can be a party favor or wedding favor conversation opener at the table while guests wait for their meals, a quick game activity for kids or the young at heart, card inserts for any occasion, like invitations, thank you notes and holiday cards.

3.  I'm still thinking about what to do with my Etsy shops.  I first started the shops as a way to help my Hoarder Rehab and now that it's not as painful to let go of things and dehoard, it turned into a hobby, but now it's more like a full time job with part time pay, so I'm gathering all my different options now.

I so thankful to Etsy for helping me find my own Hoarder Rehab way.  Now that thousands of my hoard have found new lives and homes and I've had to let all these go over and over again, it's gotten so much easier for me to part ways with my things in a more graceful manner without heart ache, stress and anxiety attacks.

More Mending as a Hoarding Alternative Creative Outlet, Story 6

My favorite silk top and socks!

I've been trying little stitches from inspiration from things I see online.  I wish I kept track of the inspirations.  I think this one came from someone's doodling I saw in a notebook.

Sometimes the the worn out spaces and holes have their own spirit and just take me somewhere timeless, mindless and unlikely!

I think, after this practice stitching, I'll be using it for kantha stitching!

This geometric type kantha of triangles is easy, fun and so simple, yet I love the way it turned out!

Saying Goodbye:  I won't be letting these go anytime soon and I don't think anyone would even bother wanting them!  But you might see some of these designs on some of my textile art coming soon!

I do need new socks, but the last ones I bought smelled so much, that just opening them made me sick with an allergy reaction.  Then I had to wash them over and over for days in different kinds of solutions and guess which one worked the best?

How do you get musty or weird and strong perfumed smells out of your clothes?

I mended my favorite silk shirt too.  As you can see from the light behind it, it's almost thread bear and the mends are difficult to see, but I added some binding on the right hand sleeve that I made from Japanese silk classic shibori.  It's like wearing a bracelet.

What I Learned:

1.  With all my allergies, finding replacements for my clothes as they wear out is becoming more and more difficult because finding 100% cotton clothes isn't as easy as it used to be, nor is finding clothes that don't smell!  So I've started to mend the ones I still have.

2.  I bought a 6 pairs of socks for the winter to replace my thread bear ones and I spent days washing them!  Here are the solutions I tried:

I washed them over and over, until they look don't look brand new anymore.  Didn't work.

Left them out for days in the rain.  This didn't work for my socks, but it worked for some of the really old boro I bought from Japan.

I left them enclosed in a bag of charcoal over night and then washed them with a sock filled with charcoal.  This has worked for some of my clothes that arrive smelling like machinery oil or have a strange strong flowery fragrance that stirs up my allergies.  It worked enough for a cashmere scarf I bought, so I could take it to the eco friendly dry cleaners and they got the rest of the smell out of it.

Here is a photo of the back of the shirt with a tiny patch at the top by the neckline and a better photo of the seam binding bracelet like edge to the wearing wrist area of the sleeve.

I even tried spraying Dr. Schultz's Air Detox on them and adding some of the oil spray with the laundry detergent, but only lightly because it says it might stain clothing.

Lastly, an Etsy buyer who has become a friend, said that she uses vanilla vodka to spray on her clothes that smell musty or have a strong perfumed smell.  Luckily, someone gave us some organic vodka over the holidays and it worked!  In an empty Dr. Schultz's Air Detox bottle I added half organic vodka and half water.

However, next time I think I'll buy some cheap vodka and add vanilla to it and might even try adding it to the laundry detergent.

3.  My mending pile is huge now and it would be so much easier and faster to just buy more clothes, but after all that washing and allergy reactions, I think I'll keep mending what I have.

4.  I usually embroider the dates on my mends too, so when they come undone I can see how long the stitching lasted, but I forgot on these two pieces.

The opposite sleeve from the seam binding one ended up with a pocket type mend.  When I get healthier and stronger, I imagine myslef safety pinning my house key inside the pocket while I go for a run!  Until then, it's a gentle reminder to continue with my yoga and walking with baby steps and I will eventually find myself running again!

It took many months and I'm thankful to say my health is on the mend, especially my lower back pain and sciatica, as long as I keep up with doing yoga daily and an hour of meditation.  I can sit down in most conventional chairs now!  which means I'm back in a car!  

I have faith that meditation will eventually help my allergies too by helping me to balance my body, mind and spirit.

I needed some new shoes too!  So I ordered these for the Lunar New Year and to wear for Valentine's day, but they are one size too big for me.  It wasn't cost effective to return them, so I upcycled them and listed them here

Furoshiki Japanese Eco Friendly Wrapping Carriers: Hoarder Inspiration or Desperation, Story 24

Eco Friendly and easier to carry around for grocery shopping!

Unfortunately, I'm a bag crazed hoarder and have tons of plastic and paper bags for grocery and farmer market shopping!  I do not know why I didn't think of just using a square piece of cloth instead!

Some history on Furoshiki:

Furoshiki are square pieces of cloth for wrapping and carrying things around. They can be made of silk, cotton, even from recycled PET-bottles. They come in different sizes and designs and in any price range as well.
 
Clothes for wrapping and carrying things have been used as long as man has been using cloth. They can be found in nearly all cultures of the world. However for some unknown reason, they have not been used that much in Europe. 

Furoshiki, the name, meaning "bath spread", derives from the Edo period practice of using them to bundle clothes while at the sentō (public baths; public furo) to prevent a mix-up of the bathers' clothes. Before becoming associated with public baths, furoshiki were known as hirazutsumi, or flat folded bundle. Eventually, the furoshiki’s usage extended to serve as a means for merchants to transport their wares or to protect and decorate a gift.

Later on in the Muromachi period, Shogun Yoshimitsu Ashikaga built a big bath house (Ou-yudono) to which Daimyos from all over the country came to bathe. After they took off their clothes they had them wrapped in a silk cloth, which usually was marked with the familyﾕs emblem so they would not mix up their things. In the Edo period, public bath houses became very popular among common people. As they did not have vinyl bags and the like in old days, they carried their soap, towels and clothing in a cloth called ﾒfuroshikiﾓ. 

Baskets or cubicles to hold your clothing, as we have today, where unheard of in the Edo days. People simply would spread out their wrapping cloth on the floor, just like a mat, would then undress and wrap their clothing into neat bundles. When they finished bathing, they would wrap up their wet towels, soap and things for the trip home.

Later they were used and still used as bento or lunch wrappings and then the furoshiki has a double use when spread out to be used on a table as a table cloth or on the grass as a picnic area.

Hoarder Inspiration:

1.  This book as over 50 different ways on how to wrap items as gifts and decorations from easy to more complicated, starting off on using three basic knots.  Many of the explanations are in English!  That is more unusual.

2.  Most of the wrappings are with beautiful textiles, but one can use anything!  During college and afterwards, I moved many times and I've used my sheets to for easy furoshiki! 

I just set all my sheets open on my bed and start dumping in all my clothes with hangers and without and when it gets too heavy for me I stop and just fold up and tie the caddy corners together and carry to the back seat or trunk!

Then I just go back to the bed that has the next open sheet on it and fill it up with perhaps items from the linen closet.  Even the fitted sheets will do the job.

3.  Furoshiki are eco friendly because any piece of square cloth can be used and then reused to give again to another as a gift wrap or easily washed when it gets dirty and easily folded and put away inside another bag or your purse.

4.  I use square or rectangular shaped clothes to line my refrigerator drawers to help soak up the moisture and veggie crumbs, etc.  When they become too moist or need a wash, I can just lift it all up, veggies and all and set it on the counter and lay down a new clean cloth and return the veggies on top of it.

5.  Also great for gardening.  We use large square pieces of burlap and old sheets to place raked leaves, pulled weeds, even fire wood to move elsewhere.  Just bundle with a tie at each caddy corner and carry to your next spot.

Hoarder Desperation:

1.  If only I had remembered about furoshiki before I collected tons of other eco friendly bags for grocery and farmer's markets, I would have loved to have just used squares of textile cloth!

2.  I will phase out my use of plastic and paper bags, which as a recovering hoarder, I can not seem to throw away anyway and have quite the collection!

However, I do appreciate my huge blue Ikea bag and my smaller yellow Ikea bag for our monthly Costco shopping trip and don't think a square piece of cloth will do the trick at Costco.

I also love my Blue Q recycled plastic bags due to their fun graphics, but had I remembered about furoshiki, I think I would have passed on them.

How will you be more eco friendly this year?  I'll be thinking about how to use more eco friends washable cloth in place of paper or plastic.

I wish they made these monkey toppers representing all 12 of the Chinese New Year zodiac animals!  The Lunar New Year zodiac signs are the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and pig. It is calculated according to Chinese lunar calendar.

I've been collecting the animals they do make and I can find without burning my wallet and so far have several to many of these in varying colors:  giraffe, camel, bull, donkey, elephant, monkey and mermaids.  Many vintage and some not.

I did find a mouse, unicorn, and dog once, at different times, but they all cost an arm and leg, so I passed them up.  Now I don't really collect them, unless I happen to see one by chance.  I still stock them for the shops though.

However, finding all the different colors and shades are becoming more and difficult these days!  Lately, I can only find them in true red, orange, green and blue.  Finding them in the old fashioned neon colors is like finding a needle in a haystack or maybe I just spend less time shopping now that I don't collect so much hoard?

Even though, the monkey was last year's animal symbol for Chinese New Year, they are still fun for other types of celebrations and here are some ideas from Etsy buyers!

They are so cute, cant wait to decorate with them for my daughter's birthday party.

What could be more fun than a barrel full of monkeys for your daughter's birthday?  

If you love or collect monkeys, these are perfect because they hang or stand on almost everything!  I have mine standing on my art to add a pop of color, hanging in plants as fun plant jewelry and of course as a drink or cake topper for any time of the year!

If you are having a pirate party, could you resist a playful monkey topper on your cup of rum punch?

Saying Goodbye:  I have my own stash of these, mostly vintage in varying colors and the harder ones to find are the gray, pink, light blue and brown ones.  Some of the vintage ones do have the year 1961 on them, if you look closely on their tails.

 The above colors are going to be the new stock colors:  a more true red and true green color, yellow will be substituted with orange and the dark blue with a more aqua blue color monkeys.

What I Learned:

1.  I've been learning that my time as a recovering hoarder and Etsy shop owner is becoming more and more valuable to me, so I'm not sure how much longer I'll be using them as my Hoarder Rehab.  

I'm "thinking" of donating my hoard, if I can, as much as I can, so I can move on to other things.  Other things?  like what? I'm not sure either, but I have the desire to do so and putting it out there!

2.  Right now, I just have a lot of thoughts, like can I donate?  I've tried that before and hoarded it all back, so how can I make this time different?  If I can donate, how much should I let go at a time without having drama trauma!  These are only little thoughts right now, but these thoughts are going to turn into something better!  I just know it!

3.  One baby step has led to another and those baby steps, no matter how small have been adding up!  I've come a long ways, baby!  My years of conscious hoarder rehab would seem to be turning into something else, still unknown, but closer now!

I hope you are enjoying the Lunar New Year celebrations that started on January 28, 2017 and will end on February 11, 2017.  There are all kinds of different ways to celebrate and many fun cultural things to learn to enjoy.  The one I'm trying this year is learning some Mandarin and Cantonese to greet others during this special time!

During the Lunar New Year period Chinese people greet one another with unique sayings when they meet, where ordinarily they would not greet people with whom they do not have a personal relationship.

So from me to you, 恭喜发财 (gong xǐ fa cái)  “Wish you wealth and prosperity.”

 I bought these for the Lunar New Year and Valentine's day, but they are one size too big for me, so I upcycled them with beads and sequins for the fun of it!  They are brand new and so cute with red satin brocade with cherry blossoms!
