Valentine Love German Die Cut Victorian Scrap Paper Ephemera:  The Destiny of Things, Story 272

I just love embossed metallic foil die cut Victorian scraps old and new!

I don't mind if something is new and just looks vintage because some of the really old papers can be harder to work with due to their delicate age and usually the new reproductions are in my price range!  

And I have no ideas about their proper naming and have found them under all kinds of tag searches, like Dresden, German, die cut, Victorian scraps, embossed, ginger diet cuts, metallic foil and on and on.  If anyone out there knows, please kindly let me know.  Until then, I'll call them Victorian scraps.

I have been collecting Victorian scraps since I was in college and have been collecting scraps of paper since I was a child, especially advertisements with old style vintage fonts and graphics.  I've always loved the graphics from my toy packages and candies.  I guess I've been a paperholic all my life!

The old German Dresden scraps with it's metallic foil and thick embossed paper are some of my favorites!  Especially angels and flowers!  I don't know why my favorites are so expensive.  Below are the flowers I love, but way out of my price range!

I have similar flowers, but in darker colors that  I've xeroxed them and cut out.  These were expensive too and even more expensive with shipping!  Last year, it was a treat reward for reaching one of my goals.  I'm glad I got them back then because now they are sold out.

I don't know why I love Victorian scraps so much.  When I was college, I used the angels to make Valentine cards and Christmas card packs for family as gifts, but since then I've only collected!

The flowers are sold out at the moment, but she has some angels, here 

So an Etsy buyer loves these German die cuts as much as I do and ordered two sets yesterday!  She was really excited about finding them and said she is going to add them to some collage pieces this Valentine!  How fun!

I wrote her back saying I'd love to see her finished art and she said she would send photos!  I am looking forward to seeing how she transforms these into her collage and I will be so happy to update this posting!

I just love the little cupid angel with the mail bag ready to deliver a love letter in hand!  Cupid and the other metallic foil die cuts were made in Germany. Here's a little information on Victorian scraps:
Victorian "scrap", also known as lithography, is colored printed papers and usually embossed die cuts that were used in Victorian times by both children and adults for various past times and collections.  
Scraps first appeared at the beginning of the 19th century in the form of engravings in black and white and tinted by hand.  Color printing came into play in 1937 and chromatography and scrap manufacturers appeared mostly in Germany and Great Britain.  These pre-cut scraps were relief stamped and embossed to give them a three-dimensional look and feel.  They are sold in sheets connected with small strips to join them together.  
Collections of scraps were pasted into special scrap albums and Victorians mixed calling cards, greeting cards and any pictures they liked and wanted to keep that were special to them.  

  You can see how they are 3d embossed and are quite fragile and can get dented and squashed easily, luckily most of the time I can bend them back into shape.

Saying Goodbye:  It's difficult for me to let any of my paper go!  It sounds funny to me now, but I hope it gets easier, since I have learned with practice to let other things go with less and less anxiety.  It is so much easier to let go when someone shares their excitement and lets me know how pleased and how much fun they are going to have with them.

What I Learned:

1.  I realize I am more attached to my paper than I thought and I do have boxes and boxes worth piling up in my craft room.  I used to have them in piles around the room and now I have made my life so much easier by dedicating an entire large junk drawer just for any scrap of paper I can't bear to throw away!

2.  I really need to start using all my scrap paper!  I've been telling myself I've been collecting all my favorite Victorian scraps to make religious reliquaries that I'd love to collect, but are also very expensive.

3.  Having an Etsy shop has helped me get over collecting all kinds of paper doilies, but not Victorian scraps!   From large 10" heart doilies in pink, red and white to small 3.5 inch heart doilies to large 8" round doilies, French doilies, silver doilies and more most of them are listed here at The Destiny of Things or do a in shop search with "doilies."

Hoarder Rehab Tip #2:  This works for me!

Admit, Accept, Confide and Contain:  Containment is very difficult for me and my hoard can grow in leaps and bounds when I'm not even looking at it!  First I confined all my hoard into drawers and storage furniture (more like stuffed haphazardly to the brims!) and then it grew into boxes and boxes until now.... Now I try and keep it all in three different spots, well actually a room and two allowed spaces.  "Allowed" is a very important shift in thinking for me, as are recovering hoarder.

I'll have to continue this tip on Friday because I am all out of my allotted time to post today.

 I've collected 100's of images of embroidered scapular type reliquaries, like the one above.
 I'd like to try and make them as patches, but not sure how well they will wash.

Note from Buyer I have one of these from childhood that I just can't depart with. I've been looking for one for my 9 year old son. He is going to love this for Valentine's Day! Thanks so much for posting!  

It's nice to know I'm in good company and not the only one who can't depart from things!  And what a sweet Valentine's gift for her 9 year old son who is most likely in third grade when "life cycles" are  explored and studied, especially frogs, butterflies and seasons.

And that's exactly how I used these plastic figurines as little puzzles to study the frog cycle for my tactile learners.  I kept all my frog realia in a pouch like the one below.  I don't know what happened to my frog pouch from my teaching days, but I found this brand new one in my hoard along with a batch of the nesting frog cycle toys.

I wasn't the only one who loves these with their wiggly google eyes!  My students loved them too and it's so nice to learn while having fun!  And who doesn't love a puzzle!  It's better than a pop quiz!

Saying Goodbye:  Of course, I have one saved for myself and some for little ones I know when  they are older.  Perhaps when the time comes, I won't need one for myself either and can let them all go. 

What I Learned:

1.  Lately letting things go has been easy going and stressless, so it feels like I'm making good progress.

However, I never know how I am going to feel about letting something go until that one random item is ordered and it's time to send it off to it's new life and home.

2.  My family is a trigger to stress which I usually release through retail therapy and have noticed that my insomnia is back after sleeping well for six months and I'm starting to do more window shopping lately, so I'll have to keep a conscious check on myself and rely on my creative outlets as alternatives to hoard shopping.

I've also slowly been getting back into shape starting with some yoga, as another alternative to stress release.

And I rely on comfort foods to destress too until I find healthier alternatives that work instantly.  Lately it's been snack size Organic Kettle chips and one square of organic Theo salted dark chocolate with almonds.  I'm not sure how my insomnia returned, but it was around the time when I ate something that gave me an allergic reaction and I was sick for a couple of days.

Anyways, I'm holding the fort down and hoarding patterns and it feels good!

My Hoarding Tip #1 that worked for me:

1.  Admit, Accept, Confide, Contain.  I contemplated about whether or not I was a hoarder for about half my life, long before hoarders were in shows and I've purged about every ten years and all my hoard would seem to boomerang back ten fold like a bad diet!

I've had back and forth battles of tug of war between thinking I was a collector, eccentric, a pack rat and a person with many different hobbies and that I just love clutter!

I've taken photos of my hoard and I've moved every two to three years dragging all my boxes and boxes of hoard with me, but that didn't phase me much, it wasn't until I started making a list of my collections that I realized that maybe, just maybe my hoard was getting in the way of my life!  Just that little shift in thinking manifested the possibility of a whole new different life and that life started to take shape, like a little flicker of star light that I could see wink at me every once in awhile.

I had to find my own way to admit, accept and confide some patterns in my life I wanted to change and see what happens without them because there must be other things out in life that's better than hoarding every time I'm overloaded with stress.

What's the worst that can happen?  I can always give myself permission to return to hoarding at any given moment and that thought brings me comfort without having to act on it most of the time, but on the other hand, how much more will my life become more enriched if I change my hoarding patterns just a little teeny weeny baby step at a time?

What baby step have you taken today to change something in your life?  Even though I'd rather be window shopping at this moment, I'm writing this posting to see what difference it will make for me.

It's probably oxymoronic or a crazy wisdom paradox to be mending with rag patches!

It might be silly and odd, but it's better than hoarding!  And it's an alternative start to helping me find a more positive constructive productive path on my Hoarder Rehab journey.  So be it!

I love the mindless free style of  act of seeing where the next piece of black thread is going to take me!  It's very calming and sends me to a timeless place.  It's like a Rip Van Winkle effect where I wake up and hours have gone by, dinner is still in the frig, laundry still in the washer and nothing but patching has been done!

Now that is better than hoarding!

Personally myself, I've been watching my mending decay over time and love to see it disintegrate into another form with each wash.  I've been mending my favorite white guaze shirt for two summers now and it has mends over mends! It's hard to see, but here is the collar:

 I upcycled pieces from a stained linen doily and made circle patch mends with random designs
For me, it's so relaxing and fun. 
The best part is there is no planning or thinking involved either!

I wear this all the time in the summer and since it's white patch mending on white and my hair  covers the collar, no one notices.  Which brings to mind these stories:

In eighth grade on a field trip, part of the assignment was to break social norms in public and document what happens.  My partner and I broke around 10 norms together.  I wore my tee shirt inside out, faced people with my back to the door on elevators, pushed an empty wheelchair and other stuff I can't remember, but what I do remember is the whole time, NOT one person reacted!  No one said or did anything out of the ordinary, not even look at us side ways or smile. 

No one said anything to us!  Which is how I met one of my best friends from college!  He was breaking a norm everyday in class and either no one noticed or said anything.

He used to wear his tee shirt inside out to class at every meeting.  I used to come late to that class because I had a waitressing job at a Rock and Roll sushi bar that didn't close until midnight and had to have coffee or I'd fall asleep.

So I'd sneak in quietly and sit in the back and I noticed he'd always have his shirt inside out with the tag sticking up.  I'd sometimes wonder why... was he a starving student without laundry quarters, did he have to wait til the weekend to take his laundry home....So one day I asked him about it and he said, "You've won a free beer!  I've been wearing my tee shirts inside out for months now and you are first to say anything!"  And a friendship began.  Some might say that was a Godwink!

So I don't think anyone even notices my mends, which is the way I like it!  I've become more brave and added some pastel color threads and have been mending with quotes.  There is a quote in yellow and one in pink.  Maybe you can see it a little better in this close up:

Back to rag patching, I've been making these patches to mend either the inside or outside of clothing and leaving them unfinished, so more can be added when used to patch mend a holey garment.

What I Learned:

1.  I've been trying a lot of different creative outlets as alternatives to hoarding, but not much keeps my interest very long.  I've tried making cards, washi tape art, mixed media art collage, jewelry assemblage, textile fiber art and mending is what I always go back to doing.

And of course, I've fallen into the hoarding trap of collecting, looking, planning and buying ALL the supplies needed to try all the different creative outlets I find appealing and there are so many! Ha!

And what do I end up using the most?  Thread and rags!

2.  I've been procrastinating about writing about my many Hoarder Rehab tips that have helped me through this journey.  I don't know where to start!  Plus I'd rather patch and mend!

I don't know why, but these mini guns are now so popular and are one of our best sellers!

I've loved these from childhood and my brother and I used to fight over them when we played army in the mud under our tree house.  We had plenty of army men, but not gold and silver guns!

Back then, I think they were metal, but today they are plastic. Some of the AK's and rifles felt like metal, but they are now sold out.

Every once in awhile I'll still find an AK in my hoard, but since an Etsy buyer wanted 100 all gold and I had only 80 in all gold, I gave her my stash too!  I was tapped out!  Now we only have the ones below and we are sold out of silver too!

This Etsy buyer wanted a "rush order" and she was all the way in New York!  Anyways, thanks to her I cleaned and organized a lot of my hoard for two days straight to find 80 and then later she wrote me saying she needed 20 more and she bought those too!

I asked her what she was using them for and she told me she was an artist and was going to use them in her next mosaic project.  She said she'd write me back when things calmed down, but things must still be busy for her and I forgot about her story until last Friday's posting.

How cool these will be in someone's mosaic art!  I wonder how it will come together...

Saying Goodbye:  I have my own stash of these again and have since found large vintage plastic ones too!  I hope the vintage ones are just as popular, but it seems most people only want them in gold.

What I Learned:

1.  I just love kitsch plastic charms from my childhood and would love to use these as a dangly border for a scarf or quilt!  I certainly have enough of them!  I guess it goes along with my love of all things miniature!

2.  Yesterday someone asked me how the mini gold guns would look as cupcake toppers and honestly, I think they are too small, unless it was put on a round wafer of chocolate or something as a background so they wouldn't get lost in frosting!

However, the vintage pistols above are about twice the size of the mini gold guns at about 2 inches long, but do not come in gold.

Which ones do you think would make better cupcake toppers?  My vote is for the larger vintage ones.  Any wild guesses as to why the mini gold guns are so popular?

Sweet Tooth Fairy Necklace Valentine's:  The Destiny of Things, Story 269

An Etsy buyer just informed me that these are for her Valentine's Sweet Tooth Party!  How fun!  I wonder if these are favors with something sweet inside, like a tic tack mint, skittle or M&M inside.  I haven't had any conventional sweets in so long, I don't even know if an M&M will fit in there!

I've put the usual heart pony bead in each one to make sure each one works correctly and doesn't pop back open.  The little heart can be kept inside for good luck until one's tooth falls out and then can be added as a little charm bead to the necklace.

I've also used resin skull beads for pirate parties ( it's the closest thing to a pirate tooth rattling around in there!), little birthday note cards or other tiny messages, fortune cookie slips, small themed confetti sequins, teeny tiny stickers, I've even tried to roll a dollar bill to fit inside, but it doesn't fit!

It does fit in here!  Yes, a carefully folded and rolled up dollar bill fits in these tooth saver treasure chests for any tooth fairy fly by exchange.  And they can be added on the tooth necklaces too!

As a teacher I could never decide on which tooth savers for the classroom, so my students got both!  Most wore them both as a necklace and when the hinges broke just added them to their pockets.

My students loved to go on treasure scavenger hunts to see how much they can find to fit in one!  Good recess activity, as who can find the most stuff to fit in one, and show and tell after recess or end of the day.

Students loved to keep their lunch tickets safe inside these too, however lunch tickets may be extinct by now!

Both the tooth necklace and the pirate fairy treasure chests fit in gumball capsules and add great party fun as pinata fillers!

So get ready for all the toothless grins and the tooth fairy this Valentine's!

Saying Goodbye:  The tooth necklaces are another popular item I had from my teaching days.  They were popular back then in my classroom and they are still popular now.  A well loved classic by anyone young at heart! 

What I Learned:

1.   I love seeing how creative others are with such fun items from my past.  So inspirational!  I wonder what could be done for all the upcoming holidays and celebrations, besides Valentine's, like Chinese New Year, Mardi Gras, St Patty's day and then Easter!

2.  Interesting how many of my favorite kitschy toy prizes from my childhood are still in style or becoming popular again!  Now if I can only find the toy prizes from Botan Rice candy boxes!

What is your favorite sweet tooth treat?  I have a french fry tooth! and would choose a bag of fries over sweet any day,  but if I had to pick something sweet it would be Theo Chocolate organic 70% dark chocolate bar salted almonds!

As a child I would spend my entire weekly allowance on Hagen Renaker ceramic figurines!

I'm not sure how my childhood love for miniatures began and I don't remember which miniature collections came first, but I loved them all equally!  I had/have mini collections of sample perfumes, animal figurines and my dollhouse collections.  I not only collected shells, but miniature shells as well!  Some where in my hoard I have a sand dollar the size of a dime!

The other half of my mini perfume collection is on display in the guest bathroom at my parent's house and so is the my Grandmother's and Aunts animal figurine collection which are mainly in family's of 3 and are either Shiken bone china or Kelvin and were made in Japan.

There are a lot of Hagen Renaker knock offs out there and personally some of them I like better!  I also used to collect Redball hand blown glass animal figurines.  I've included photos of my favorites towards the end of this posting.

I was so happy to hear that "this is perfect for a Hagen Renaker collector!" and it went on to it's new life and new home!

Hagen Renaker has been around for 70 years, since 1945 and is still in business today.  They are a family owned company located in California.  John and Maxine Renaker started out in their garage in Culver City.  Each one is ceramic and handcrafted.  I remember them glued on a little square piece of paper and costing anywhere from 15 cents to a quarter.

Saying Goodbye:  Through practice and immersing myself into letting go of several hundred of my hoarded items, it's been mostly painless now to send off something to it's new life, but it hasn't always been that way!  I used to have small panic attacks with sadness and seller's remorse quite often, but haven't had one lately.

Is that due to get used to it or perhaps one of my dear heartfelt items hasn't sold yet?  It's so hard to know until it happens!

What I Learned:

1.  I haven't had time to count lately, but I think I'm close or past letting go of 1000 hoarded items! and I think I'm about half way through my hoard.

2.  It's been a roller coaster journey with scary emotions, long lost memories and buried dreams erupting to the surface of my present life.  So much of my hoard is connected and tied up to my past, like a big impossible knotted up ball of who knows what that can only be cut up to unravel.

3.  Conscious dehoarding has brought much joyous insightful progress and includes what feels like mile long setbacks, but now my dehoarding seems to have leveled off and I feel more grounded about it.  I've also taken notice of my retail therapy patterns and which triggers can lure me back into a hoarding vicious cycle.

4.  I've been trying different creative outlets to help me find alternatives to hoarding.  Some work better than others.

5.  Overall, 2015 is full of positive possibilities towards my Hoarder Rehab and better health!

My Grandmother and Aunt also had a collection of hand blown glass figurines,
made in Japan by Redball Brand.  I just loved them too and was allowed to keep one in my pocket!
