PHOTO UPDATE: Textile Art Brooches Working Double Duty: The Destiny of Things, Story 576

Textile Art Brooches Working Double Duty:  Mending Ways, Story 17

Simple yet, such creative uses!  One is traditional, the other artsy!  BEFORE:

This was my favorite one, out of the 10 or so I made.  Not sure why, but I'm thankful it sold and to a creative person at that.  This one is sold out, but more like it are available, here

Traditional use with photo update:

Thank you Etsy buyer!  Love the color combinations going on!  So cute!  Love the jacket!

Artful Use Photo Update:  I really love this screen art display idea!

I love this screen to display art because it will show both sides of the work on slow stitch textile art and it acts as a room divider that is semi see through.

Here is another one of my textile art brooches on the art screen display.  BEFORE:

This one is sold out, but more like it are available here

AFTER:  Photo update on art screen display!  I love this idea, I think it's a perfect way to show both sides of art!  Sometimes I like how the back sides turn out better than the fronts!

Thanks again Etsy buyer for showing your ideas, even though I'm two years late with this posting!
Better late then never!  It was lost in my hoard drafts to write and post!

Saying Goodbye:  More like, "hello!"  I think I'll use this screen idea to use as a room divider and display the things I like from either side.

Some are made from American boro and the others are made from very time worn Society silk doilies, which technically would be considered American boro, available here.

What I Learned:

1.  There are so many creative uses for anything!  It boggles my mind!  Probably not a good idea for a recovering hoarder because I don't want to start saving every little thing again!  Now, where do I need a screen room divider!  Maybe as an alternative window curtain because I can't think of a place we need a room divider.

2.  Makes me want to dig up my little hoard of Society silk doilies and make some more!  Except right now, I've been so enthralled with mended clothes and since there is nothing left to watch on Netflix, I've been watching old movies that show mended clothes.  The latest being, "Tribes of Europa," which is an okay show, but I do love the mended clothes the tribe, the Origines wear.

So inspired in fact, I've stitched a t shirt and moving on to another t shirt and will watch the first few episodes again to see the necklace that Liv wears and then make her necklace.  It looks like it's made from all cloth and other natural fibers, so maybe I'll be able to wear it, since I'm allergic to metals.  Or was allergic to metals for about 10 years and got so used to wearing no jewelry that any jewelry wear feels heavy now.

Thank you Etsy buyer for sharing your idea filled story!  I wish I could be a fly on the wall and see the rest of your art filled home!  And my apologies for taking so long to post this story.  I am so back logged with hoards of stories, I'm still thinking of moving to instagram, but not sure if I can navigate well enough without spending tons of time over there figuring it all out or to just keep blogging.

Sales are still coming!  I've been taking what I call a "minimalist" Etsy vacation, which means I just package orders and re list.  No new listing, instead I've been organizing my hoard of Japanese boro, antique cutter quilts and whatever else I've stuffed in boxes!

RESOLVED:  The postal issues I mentioned in the last posting have mostly been resolved.  We filed claims on all three and all but one was granted.  USPS no longer guarantees delivery dates, which means as an Etsy shop owner, we can't either.  What a bummer!

Click on the shop names to visit my hoard: HoarderRehab with 170 items, The Destiny of Things- 164 items, VintageToGoEasy - 160 items and JunkDrawerAndMore - 176 items.   And now, Mending Ways with 69 items!    Many of my textile art patches have found new "forever" homes. I made more!  I'm found my creative mojo again!  I am immensely grateful, thank you all who are supporting my alternative to hoarding!

Maybe you'll find something and give it new life and a new home!  All pleasant lookieloos are appreciated!

Five Minutes' Peace Funny and Fun Book by Jill Murphy: The Destiny of Things, Story 575

Five Minutes' Peace Funny and Fun Book by Jill Murphy:  The Destiny of Things, Story 575

I think a lot of parents and teachers can relate, well maybe not so many teachers anymore!

Love how serene she looks with her cup of tea!

Here is the email story I received:

I sure do have a story behind my purchase! I’m an 80’s baby and used to read this book when I was a little girl. I thought it was hilarious because my brothers and I did the same things to my poor Mama! Fast forward to chats with fellow Mom friends recently and the chaos of this year with kids home, and I totally remembered this book from when I was little - the name of the title and all! Can’t wait to hold it in my hands and read it again. I’m sure my kids will think it’s hilarious too. Thank you so much!! Made my day to find it!! 😊

This page says it starts it all!

Here is what I wrote back:

Good morning Lyndi! Thank you for your story behind your purchase! I totally love it! I used to read that story every year for Mother's day to my third graders, in hopes they'd give their Mom a day of peace! I hope you and your kids have a fun story time and you get it soon! Thanks for making my day with your email! Kennedy

I was going to save this for Mother's day, but thought this story would be a good way to start off the new year.  Which I can't believe it's already February?  What happened to January?  I guess I've been thinking about this posting for a month now?

There are many teachable moments in this book, but the one I always used was the apostrophe in the title, "Minutes.'"  It was a good way to introduce how to use apostrophe's to third graders and a good review for 5th graders too!

After the book was read and we were all basically over talking about it.  I'd go back and show the class the front cover again and say, one last thing and ask if anyone saw anything unusual about it.  I got all kinds of funny answers, if I didn't get the answer I was looking for, I'd say, "here's a clue it's in the title..." and then I'd see tons of hands go up!

Hope mom got her 5 minutes of peace before all this!

SAYING GOODBYE:  This is such a funny and fun book because all those young at heart can relate to both the kids and the parents!  It's laughs all around!  And hopefully through the laughter, everyone can see the others point of view and maybe come to some peaceful resolutions for all!  Too bad world peace isn't as easy!

I think anyone with kids this last year during the lock downs know how precious 5 minutes of peace can be!  I know in the past as a teacher I did!  And I wonder what it's like to be a teacher these days...

What I Learned:

1.  I thought about stopping a lot of things this year, so I have more time to organize my textile hoard an for stitching.  Collecting these stories are one of them on my list, especially since my hoarding is under control, but the stories keep coming in, so I'm not sure now.  The other thing I was thinking of stopping was the "thank you" packaging I send a long with each order, not because I want to stop sending it, but because it takes up so much room.  They both kind of go hand in hand because in the "thank you" packaging, I add the note asking for a story behind each purchase.

Basically, the "thank you" packaging are mostly samples of things we sell at our shop, but I do spend money on little seasonal and holiday items, like stickers and small trinkets and I like how it gives some support to each order, but it takes the space of my entire kimono tansu (Japanese cabinet) and now that I've been organizing my Japanese boro textiles, I'd rather put my textiles in there!  Still undecided!

2.  I've been trying to wake up earlier to have more time, but that is not working this year.  It worked last year, but not this year so far.  Not sure why.  Another mystery to solve!  Life is full of mysteries!

What mystery are solving today?  Today's mystery is Etsy customers not getting their orders!  More on that below.

BOOK SPOILER ALERT!

Look who needs 5 minutes of peace now!

Thank you Etsy buyer for sharing your kindred story!  I wish I could be a fly on the wall when the books gets in your hands and you read the story!  Will you read it alone for your own 5 minutes of peace?  And then read if with family?

Sales are back up and crazy!  Hopefully it will slow down after Valentine's, so I have more time for listing, rather than packaging.  Our weekly average was 24 sales a week and now it's 36!  We went from about 100 orders per month to 144 per month.  During peak holidays, it's even more!

We will still honor the Etsy's $35 free shipping guarantee for DOMESTIC orders only, if you request it though Etsy email, even though we are no longer signed up for it.  Unfortunately, right now due to the pandemic, there are delivery delays on many orders, domestic and global. Domestically, we have two lost orders at the moment, one says it's been delivered, but the customer says it has not.  I'll have to double check the address it was sent to and confirm it's the correct one.

Another has a USPS alert on it and says it needs to be scanned for delivery, but that's been there since January 10, 2021, and she ordered it the beginning of Jan, not sure what to do about that one, we put in a claim for her and to get an email when it's delivered, but haven't heard a peep from USPS, so we'll have to take it to the post office.

Another customer said she didn't get her order and the USPS said it was delivered and delivered to a non deliverable address and not claimed.  Not sure what happened there or what that actually means... that order was returned to us for non deliverable address.  The customer says she has lived there for 10 years!  We refunded her order.

We've been getting more and more International shipping, so I guess that's good.  Haven't heard anything from them, so I hope they are getting their orders.  We send all our Domestic orders with tracking and insurance and all global orders with insurance because tracking is usually more expensive.  Not sure if that's true anymore, I'll have to ask the Mr, our postal tech.  I think some International shipping had tracking until it gets to the country and just tells when it was delivered.  Global shipping may have restrictions depending on your countries covid regulations.

USPS raised their prices, mainly on 2-3 day Priority mail, they do not guarantee any other their delivery times, so neither can we.  I wish I had more time to pay attention to deliveries, but only can when something goes wrong.  For instance, I did notice that we shipped out two of the same orders to different addresses in Texas on the same day, one went USPS first class and the other went 2-3 day Priroity and they both took 5 days to get delivered.

The TX customer who paid extra for 2-3 day Priority wrote after 3 days wondering where her package was.  We put in a postal claim for her too, but are still waiting for USPS to respond back.
