Handmade Fortune Teller Costume and Booth: The Destiny of Things, Story 407

Handmade Fortune Teller Costume and Booth:  The Destiny of Things, Story 407

An Etsy buyer is passing out 500 fortune teller cards from her booth this Halloween!

How fun!  And I just love her handmade fortune teller costume and booth!  Here is a photo of her booth, "under construction!"

Love the colors and the shiny baubles!

So cool!  And later she sent me a photo of it completed!

Love the added lights, what a difference it made!

So creative!  I just had to know how she was going to look in there and she sent a photo of her inside it too!  So amazing!

This puts the biggest smile on my face and I want my fortune told pronto!

Everything a fortune teller needs, even a crystal ball!  What fun details!  Love the mask too!
Not only did she share she story with photos, but she left me a very kind inspirational comment on here too!

Unfortunately, i can't figure out how to give her a "thank you" comment back!  I tried three times and every time it was just deleted.  When my blog gets updated and things change, I just can't figure it out again.  Ho hum.... Onwards and upwards....

Originally these stack of 500 cards were for the Ask Swami or Madame X penny napkin dispenser machine at diners and made more popular by the Twilight Zone episode starring William Shatner, called "Nick of Time."

These are great for fortune tellers with booths because these are interactive fortunes.  You ask a "yes" or "no" question and the card gives you an answer.  It also gives you a general fortune in the style of a deck of cards.  And a quirky, sometimes non politically correct, definition of a word.  It's meant to be funny, but adults might have some explaining to do if children are included!

Saying Goodbye:  I have my own stack of 500 put away for future use.  I use mine in many different ways.  They make great impromptu mini garlands.  I just use a string and simply add these too them, since they have a cut in the hole and are easy to pop on the string.

I also use them as gift tags, since they are easy to add to thin ribbon as gift wrap with the slit in the hole and make an interesting fun conversation piece to add to each gift.

Fun snail mail card or letter inserts too!

This is a complete set of 52 fortune cards, one of each type, available here!  Yes, I sorted and collated a couple stacks to make them.

What I Learned:

1.  When I was a kid, most of our Halloween costumes were handmade, but my brother and I coveted the store bought ones with the plastic masks and polyester outfits.  We got store bought ones once and went back to homemade ones.

I still love to see handmade ones over the store bought, but they both can be fun!

2.  Some of my favorite hoard have become shop best sellers!  These are great for anything fortune teller related, like poker night to Twilight Zone parties, as table confetti, pinata filler, slip inside cocktail napkins for conversation starters, Sunday dinner fun, etc.

3.  It's getting closer and closer to the autumn and winter holidays and my stress usually sky rockets and my hoarding retail therapy begins, but this year might be different.  Blogging as a recovering hoarder has helped me in ways, I didn't think possible.  It's kept me on track with a routine and dehoarding through my shops has taught me more than I expected.

Handmade costumes can't get much better than this!
Such great memories!  My mom keeps a photo of us in our Halloween costumes as toddlers in a locket on her charm bracelet and we look at it all the time still!

4.  My sciatica was an alert to pay more attention to self care and when my lower back gave out, it gave me no choice, but to slow down and focus on my health, which gave me time to stop and contemplate about my hoarding ways.  I started reading books, I hadn't touched for the past ten years and found new insights to help me.

One, I'm not a believer of meditating, but that has been one of the biggest factors to helping me regain my health and reduce and rid of my lower back pain.  I was doing weeks of yoga, but one bad bend and my lower back gave out on me and I was bedridden for many days.  I'm not sure how much of the meditation helped besides rest, but that's all I did and now I'm back to doing yoga pain free.

It's even helped my sciatica pain.  I think it might be all the relaxing that meditation creates for me and I'm almost pain free from sciatica too.

Secondly, returning to reading books has helped me broaden other areas of my life and also given me tips on dehoarding.  I just started opening random books to any page and there was the message I needed!  One was about trashing 10 items a day!  As a recovering hoarder, the thought of throwing anything out completely stressed me to the max.

Happily, it did plant a seed in my mind and a couple of days later, I threw out a piece of paper.  I could go on about what kinds of paper I save, but it would take up too much time.  Now I can throw out about 20-30 pieces of paper a day!  What progress, I've made from a seed in my mind to taking a tiny baby step!

4.  So my decline in health has had several silver linings!  It's helped me to see other directions my life can take, besides my hoarding and dehoarding cycles, it's also given me some time to use meditation to help all aspects of my life and it's given me time to be more creative with my art and other projects.

If you need a smaller random amount from 6 to 50 to 100 fortune cards, available here

Thank you Etsy buyer from VintageToGoEasy for sharing your story and wonderful with me and letting me know how you will be using them!  I absolutely love your fortune teller booth and you look great inside it..... just like the penny arcade ones! Actually, you look better than than the penny arcades ones! So cute, mysterious and lovely!

And thank you so much for leaving me a comment and I was so ecstatic to hear I inspired you to clear out some of your hoard!  Believe me, your inspiration has helped me with mine!  More than you'll ever know!  Thank you!

All these stories and ideas really help me stay on track with mine. And I am so happy to find that I can start throwing stuff away and it's just going to take a lot of baby steps.

Thank you Etsy for the best Hoarder Rehab ever!  And for all the kind people I'm meeting who are helping me indirectly and directly in so many ways with my Hoarder Rehab!  I've been gleaning so much insight about my hoarding ways!

I'm still in wellness recovery mode and my health has taken great leaps towards less to zero back pain with meditation.  I don't have the same amount of time to spend on Etsy, but I am keeping the shops open and relisting and new listing as often as I can because it keeps me on my old familiar regular routine.

I stopped using the book, Rebuilding My Back because for some reason, I just kept injuring myself from the exercises in it, I guess I was doing them wrong, but I'm back to careful yoga and walking.

I have so been relisting and new listing almost daily!

Eye Glam Halloween Mermaid Costume Accessory Kit: The Destiny of Things, Story 406

Eye Glam Halloween Mermaid Costume Accessory: The Destiny of Things, Story 406

I got these for a different reason and it didn't work out, but it did for someone else!

Revlon Rhinestone Eye Glam Kit, available here

I received this short and sweet note:

Exactly what I need for my mermaid costume for Halloween. Thank you very much.

I am so happy to make my mistake into a win!  Of course, I'd love to be a fly on the wall and how she uses these for her Halloween mermaid costume, but maybe she'll look like something like this!

Revlon Rhinestone Eye Glam Kit, available here

There is a beautiful mermaid make up tutorial on how to apply cosmetics to your face and body using Spirit gum to apply gems and sequins, it is theatrical make up glue used since the 1890s and can be removed with baby oil.  Anyways, to see the beautiful mermaid and learn how to apply is here:

Info and application from Etsy blog, link below.  Mermaid scales accessory beautifully created:  Etsy blog link on how to tutorial:

https://www.etsy.com/blog/en/2013/halloween-mermaid-makeup-tutorial/

I tried to download a photo of the magnificent mermaid, but couldn't figure it out, but it's definitely worth a looksie!

Saying Goodbye:  I am so happy to say goodbye to these!  I have several pieces of jewelry that are missing different color rhinestones and I thought I could replace them with these, but they are all too big.  Boo hoo!

Here is an example of one of the jewelry pieces that needs a rhinestone.
Sterling red enamel lingerie pin, missing a rhinestone available here

What I Learned:

1.  It's so difficult for me to buy stuff when I'm trying to replace something and usually just end up guessing the size, etc.  And guessing wrong!

As a recovering hoarder, I think this might be easily solved, if I just buy stuff or find things that's either not broken or doesn't need to be fixed or missing something.  Let's see how that goes!

2.  As a recovering hoarder, trying not to buy more stuff, when I do and it doesn't turn out like I thought, I need to remember that it's okay to make mistakes and forgive myself, let it go and move on.

I am very hard on myself, as a recovering hoarder and used to beat myself over buying things I shouldn't have, but now I know this is counter productive towards my progress and am learning to forgive myself more easily.  Baby steps!

It hasn't been easy for me to change my habits, but learning to forgive myself for my mistakes, instead of dwelling on them has helped me immensely!

Do you need mermaid decorations to match your mermaid theme party?

Smaller amounts, like 8 or more are available here

3.  My health has taken a turn for the worst in many areas, but instead of lamenting about it, I'm taking the time to change my health into a full recovery program!  I am eating better (I've cut out sugar and dairy and other stuff again for my allergies), I started physical therapy for my sciatica, which is basically rebuilding my back.  It should take about 2-6 months.

I've started many other things to improve my health, like meditation for the pain and starting a very easy limited exercise program, relaxing more outside in the sun and enjoying reading books again.

4.  However, this means I need to spend less time on Etsy, especially with Etsy chores, like relisting and new listing ( I used to relist and new list almost daily and now it's weekly ), spending a lot of weekend time taking photos (we spend less time taking photos, hence new listing less too), how many times I check Etsy emails a day, promoting other shops (which I feel guilty about not doing and even though I tell myself my health is more important, I still have conflicting feelings about no promoting others) and responding to treasuries (Etsy has cancelled treasuries for some reason, so at least I don't feel guilty about not commenting and faving them, etc.)

5.  I tried taking less time to write my blog posts or to write when I have little window of feeling better and just take a bit of time daily to write one posting, but I lose focus too easily and forget to include what I want to write or other stuff I deem important, so I decided to write and blog post, when I have good days.

For instance, I got some Etsy buyers mixed up lately with who bought what and I forgot to include on Etsy's buyers shop!  I know if I try to add it to last time's blog post, it will not work for me because the page format will get all messed up and I don't know how to fix it, once it gets like that so I'm adding it here below.

5.  It's been very difficult to put my health over everything else, until now.  I've been so used to as a teacher, taking care of everyone else and it also stems from my childhood of taking care of my family, but now, even though it feels strange I've been focusing on my own self care first!

6.  I still have a lingering head cold that can't decide to stay or go away, so today I've decided to take care of myself like I'm a sick kid who gets to stay home from school and just rest, do stuff when I have the energy, nap a lot, eat and drink to help get rid of this cold once and for all!

I have books, healthy drinks and other remedies at my bedside to keep me company and help me through the day.

Another fun mermaid. merman, pirate costume accessory, shell lei necklaces, available here

Thank you Etsy buyer from JunkDrawerAndMore for sharing your story with me and letting me know you are going to be a beautiful mermaid using these for Halloween!

All these stories and ideas really help me stay on track with mine. And I am so happy to start forgiving myself when my hoard goes haywire, instead of getting down on my self and making my life worse.

Oh, I seem to have gotten Etsy buyers and stories mixed up and need to give some more love to my last blog post story inspirer!  Last Wednesday's blog post was about an Etsy buyers, "Anti Monsanto Halloween costume" and she has an Etsy shop too, Moonlight Martini!

I could spend hours in her shop browsing, but here are some of my favorites!  A vintage Let's Boogie Patch, here, mod 60s neon flower power stickers, here and lastly, Ambassador Magma Monster Claw!

And there's more, she has the cutest story about how she got started in retail on her about page, here (it's worth reading due to it's funniness and fun!) and many of her items have been in TV shows, so you can read about that on her profile, here.

Little by little, I am feeling stronger and stronger each day as I focus on my self care.  My health ailments were starting to pile up, like my hoard, but I'm taking care of them now and it feels really good to do so.

I will continue to relist and new listing weekly until I recover again!

Halloween Costume & Mini Dollar Bills: The Destiny of Things, Story 405

Halloween Costume & Dollar Bills:  The Destiny of Things, Story 405

How these are going to be incorporated into a Halloween costume?

Lots of mini toy play money, available here

Here is the note I received from Etsy shop owner, Moonlight Martini:

Thanks so much for the great service and eclectic mix of "extras" and your personal note. These bills will be used for a Halloween costume. :) Cheers!

Lots of mini toy play money, available here

I would love to see her Halloween costume in progress and it's debut at the Halloween party!  I just love handmade costumes!  Now that sounds like it's going to be a very interesting costume at a very interesting Halloween party!  Wish I could be a fly on the wall!

Last year, an Etsy buyer used them for an ugly sweater pole dancer Halloween costume accessory.  I guess I forgot to blog about it because now I can't find the story.

Hopefully these will give you ideas for a Halloween costume this year, if you still need one!

I've used mine in many ways, mainly in the classroom to teach money as a third grade skill when I was a teacher.  I used to hold auctions in the classroom too, so they could see the concept of money in action while auctioning off recycled toys students donated, confiscated classroom items and other prizes.

Also as practice paper for dollar bill origami in the classroom for those that mini stuff, until they mastered it, like dollar bill shirt origami for Father's day, rings for Mother's day, etc

Now that I've retired, it's been used as bling for James Bond Casino to poker night parties as pinata confetti filler.  Looks great falling out of a broken pinata and as table confetti decorations too.

Lots of mini toy play money, available here

Saying Goodbye:  i am so thankful that some of my teacher hoard is being used in other fun ways and will be happy when the last buck has passed, which won't be long I hope because I'm down to my last ones!

What I Learned:

1.  Last time I wrote about one of the reasons why I hoard and it was because I see so much potential in my hoard of hoards.  So i keep myself busy buying stuff for my collection of "potential" projects, instead of "actually" using them in projects!

What a revelation for me!

2.  I've been studying this book, Live the Life you Love and it also gives me ideas on how to solve my hoarding problem.

3.  One of them was to imagine my hoarded space as it was intending or let my dreams go wild as to how I'd do with the space if it was empty.  I got nothing.  Today, I'm still having difficulties imagining my music art room as I want it to be, without hoard.  I wonder what that means?  Am I in denial?  procrastinating? or what?

4.  The other solution was to throw out 10 things a day.  I had to put the book down after reading that solution.  The thought of throwing out 10 things a day made my stress level so high, I felt like buying stuff to release my anxiety.

An Etsy buyer themed her Burning Man costume around these and passed them out.  One stack of about 500 fortune teller card slips for Twilight Zone party fans, Swami, Madame X penny napkin dispenser or for passing out at Burning Man!
Available here.  Photo via Hoarder Rehab

5.  I don't know how long it's been, but one day I thought I'd take a baby step and try to throw something out.  It was a piece of paper.  Now it sounds silly, but throwing out the ONE piece of paper was a huge baby step for me and the next day, I threw out 5 pieces of paper and the next 8 and so on.

Today I only threw out 6 pieces of paper and even though it wasn't more than the other day, it's still progress and I also realized that instead of going at my own pace, I've been trying to out do myself with my goals each time because I still have my "over achiever" attitude from my childhood.

It is very difficult for me to let go of my "over achiever" attitude and progress at my own pace, whether it's forward or backward or staying in one spot, but I'm practicing at it everyday now.

6.  I'm learning to forgive myself.  There is really no reason to "spaz" out over not being able to throw out as many papers as the day before as long as I'm throwing "something" out.

More about this next time.

Mini Ballerina Replacement for Musical Teapot: The Destiny of Things, Story 404

Mini Ballerina Replacement for Musical Teapot:  The Destiny of Things, Story 404

I have seen these for jewelry and music boxes, but not a teapot!  BEFORE:

Mini ballerina with real tutu to replace broken ones for jewelry, music boxes and a teapot, available here

Here is the note I received from a kind Etsy buyer, Heather and shop owner of Pearl Glasses Vintage:

Hello! Thanks for my little ballerina and the kind note. She is being used as a replacement in a cute vintage musical teapot that plays "Tea for Two" and spins the ballerina. However, the original ballerina had sadly broke her dancing shoes...so it's great to find a replacement that closely matches the original!

AFTER:

The teapot is so cute!  and is available here at Heather's shop Pearl Glasses Vintage

It's a musical teapot that plays "Tea for Two" and the ballerina spins when the music is played?  How wonderful, is that?  See it in action spinning and listen to it's sweet music here, https://youtu.be/Zlwbh3T9Dx8

Did you check it out?  When you lift up the teapot is plays the song and the ballerina spins and when you put the teapot down it stops!  What magic!

Wouldn't this be a great for a tea party?  especially with children?  Everyone will want to take turns serving tea!

The teapot is adorable! and available here at Heather's shop Pearl Glasses Vintage

Good thing I'm a recovering hoarder who is changing my ways, otherwise I'd find a good excuse, I mean, reason to buy this!  Ever since, we've stocked these little twirly girl ballerinas, I've seen so many different kinds of jewelry and/or music boxes that include them, but I've never ever seen a teapot!  And it plays "Tea for Two"?  Incredibly awesome!

Saying Goodbye:  We don't have many of these left in stock and most likely won't be finding anymore.  I just counted and we only have 3 available.  I have my own stash of these put away, so I won't miss them!

Most of the vintage jewelry music boxes I see now are like the one above.
I'm not sure where I found this photo.

What I Learned:

1.  Some of my vintage art hoard is very popular and sell out fast!  When I found these, I had no idea they were for vintage jewelry or music boxes.  I thought they were cupcake toppers, but I got them because I was going through a circus themed art phase.

Well, actually I was more like hoarding circus themed mini figurines!  I thought I'd be making some mixed media art with a circus theme, but I haven't as of yet.

2.  I've been really ill lately, like I've hit rock bottom.  Lots of ailments to speak of, but the 3 main ones are my mystery allergies (meaning I can't figure out what I'm allergic too yet!  I haven't changed anything, so either my immune system needs more attention or something I usually eat or wash or clean with has changed ingredients.) and for the past couple weeks, I've caught a cold that can't decide to either go away or go full blown.

My insomnia is back and lastly, my sciatica is at it's worst and I've decided to take control of it all and focus as much time as I can on recovering my health and rebuilding my back.

Here is a ballerina from an Etsy buyer who refurbishes jewelry boxes for her collection.

3.  In the beginning, I had to spend a lot of time resting, so I've been reading a lot.  Lots of different books and I've been so indecisive lately, that I just pick one up and turn to a page and start reading.

Every book I picked off my shelf and every page I've turned to has given me clues to so many of my questions, but this one in particular called "Live the Life You Love" by Barbara Sher had the perfect little gem on why I hoard that actually makes sense to me!  I hoard because everything I see and want and buy has "potential."

It makes me feel like life has potential.  It may look like clutter and junk, but every item I save represents an opportunity!

And like Barbara Sher says, "clutter isn't a problem for me.  Clutter solves a problem for me."  She hit the nail so hard for me it hurts!  And goes on to say, "Clutter in the background gives the illusion that I'm surrounded by projects just waiting to be done."

What to do about it?  I'm still trying to figure out, but it has given me a shift in my hoarding ways!

4.  Unfortunately, I have to give my hoard and what to do about it a rest, which I suppose might be good because I'm still in shock over the "hoard potential" epiphany because now I'm going to focus on my health until I'm fully recovered.

Rebuilding my back is going to take 2-6 months with exercises I need to do 6-8 times a day.  It sounds like a lot of time and dedication, but I've had sciatica for about the same time and can no longer tolerate not sitting in a conventional chair or car and being that sedentary is most likely making my back worse!

This cute little box could use a new ballerina!
Don't remember where I found this photo, probably on google.

5.  Which means my hoard and Etsy shops are going to take the back seat for awhile, which hasn't been easy for me to do because I think I've become addicted to Etsy.

When my allergies first started to get worse, I tried to go on an Etsy diet, but didn't do so well on it.  Finally it seems, it has cost me more of my health and now I'm on a "cold turkey" Etsy diet and all I can really do or have time for now is to maintain my shops.

6.  And since I'm so indecisive, I need time to sort things out or maybe I'll just maintain my shops without doing Etsy chores and see how the chips fall.  My saving grace is that at least my shops bring me some sort of familiar routine, while I spend most of my time on a complete recovery.

Thank you Etsy buye, Heather and shop owner of Pearl Glasses Vintage for sharing your musical "Tea for Two" teapot with a photo, video and a little note.  It inspires me and I hope it inspires others too!

All these stories and ideas really help me stay on track with mine. And I am so happy to find another clue to the mystery of why I hoard.

Thank you Etsy for the best Hoarder Rehab ever!  And for all the kind people I'm meeting who are helping me indirectly and directly in so many ways with my Hoarder Rehab!  I've been gleaning so much insight about my hoarding ways!

This ballerina sure could use a tutu cover up!

So I guess my Etsy burn out mode has turned into emergency wellness recovery mode, so I can improve my health little by little until I reach full recovery.  I never did figure out what was causing my rash and I still get it every once in awhile.

The position I was offered to join an educational children animation program is still in the works, but it's been so long now I can barely keep my fingers crossed.

I have so many items to relist that I hope to be listing new items next week.
