Russel Wright's Diner Plate and Disneyland's 50s Carnation Cafe: The Destiny of Things, Story 155

Russel Wright's Diner Plate and Disneyland's 50s Carnation Cafe:  The Destiny of Things, Story 155

I've had these Russel Wright Carnation Sterling China plates since the 80s because...

photo via Hoarder Rehab, available upon request

Some where in the back of my head, one day I think my brother is going to want these!  WRONG!  Even though we've collected everything Russel Wright since high school he still doesn't want these!

Back in the day thrifting Russel Wright was much more plentiful than it is now.  We found his metal patio chairs, large heavy mugs, hand signed resin candle holders, pink espresso cups, wall clocks, not to mention my brother's entire collection of Iroquois, Steubenville and Sterling dish sets, which include servings for 12 and almost all the accessories in all the Iroquois colors, like the wine carafe and tea pots, etc.

We passed up so much Russel Wright thirfting!  That would never happen now, but then again, now it's rare to find Russel Wright thrifting!

I found these in a thrift shop in Redondo Beach or Torrance.  It was the year I moved over 10 times in one year and instead of taking stuff with me I'd have a yard sale, move to the next place and use the money from the yard sale to use.  We finally settled down in Gardena and we lived in a garage that was huge!

It was actually a tri-plex, but not really.  The garage was more like a bunch of rooms a dentist or doctor kept adding on for storage.  On the property was his three bedroom house and his work place.  We converted the work place into a studio and rented it out and moved into the garage.

It's been one of my favorite homes!  I learned how to dry wall, dig trenches for drains, weld copper piping, etc and best of all find stuff for the garage!  I found all kinds of huge large free salvage windows from the 40s with frosted glass with the turning in circle knobs, a double restuarant sink that could hide dishes unseen for over a week!  A Cold Spot refrigerator with turquoise accents that went flush with the wall, glass block windows in the closets and on and on.

And with all the rooms added on it was like a little maze house!  I think I was inspired by loft living in the movie, Diva. It felt like anything goes and it did!

I used to use these for Sunday breakfast, but then they got packed away and lost in my hoard.  I've never seen these plates again thrifting, but I've found plenty of other Russel Wright Sterling China and Iroquois that I collected for my brother.

I refound them and listed them on Etsy and when I did price comparables, I saw on someone else's description that these might have been made for Disneyland's Carnation Cafe back in the 50s and 60s.

So that debate has been open until now....

Someone bought one plate and asked if I also had the cups and saucers.  We started negotiating price for the rest of them.  It was cut throat dealing, but I'm used to that from real estate investing and just kept negotiating, which I learned from the documentary, "How To Draw a Bunny."

Anyways, I've kind blocked out what happened, but I started to have a panic attack from these leaving at a 10% discount, so I shut down and went on vacation to think about it.  Nothing to do with this negotiation, but it was others that were ending up odd and not so pleasant.

Now I remember what was happening at the time and all I can say is that although sales are high during winter holidays the people are too interesting for me and most likely next year our shops will be closed for the holidays!

photo via Hoarder Rehab, available upon request

So as a last ditch effort to be able to let go of these plates, despite my stress and anxiety, I asked for a story and I got one.

He said that his two brothers went to Disneyland in 1957. They ate at the Disneyland Carnation ice cream parlor on Main Street. His father enjoyed the coffee cups so much he tried to buy some. At the ice cream parlor they could not sell them but they gave his dad the address to write.

His Dad wrote and explained how the cups made everything taste great. The cups have a very unusual style. He still has the letters and receipts from his dad.  He said, some cups have broken over the years and his Dad gave many away. Now the ones that are left sit in the china cabinet as a memory of days of his past.

He said his Dad never bought the plates to match the cups and saucers that his Dad first saw and loved from the Carnation Cafe on Main Street inside Disneyland, but  would like to include them in the china cabinet. He wasn't born yet, but remembers his dad telling the story and how thrilled he was to get some cups.

photo via The Restaurant Ware Connection Network here and an article about it's closing in 1997, here.  It has since reopened, March 2013 in it's original location sans the Russel Wright Carnation plates, see new dishes here.

So since about mid December I haven't been doing very well parting with a few choice items, which I don't know which ones they are until they are ordered!  It's very dismaying and irrational to me, but now I just let the feeling pass through me and deal with my hoard and it's all it's array of feelings, memories and issues, as best I can.

I don't know what to do about and it feels like a huge backslide.  I am trying not to judge myself and doing my best to accept it as a part of life and as long as I'm moving forward, it will take me some where.

Maybe it's time to try another type of therapy for myself and I'm thinking it's returning to my art and to not focus so heavily on dehoarding, since over 567 items have found new lives and home.  I am only about half way through the hoard in my house and afterwards need to clear out my long bed truck with extra cabin!  but there is enough space in the music art room to move through it more easily.

Maybe enough hoard has left to have cleared my mind to move on to the next phase into the unknown!

Saying Goodbye:  It was difficult to part with one of these, so I put them back into the cupboard to use again for weekend breakfast.  It's been a month now and we end up using our Fire King Azurite blue plates over the Carnation plates every time.

So I guess that means I will try again and part with these!  Any takers? All offers noted.

What I Learned:

1.  I am attached to "things" more than most people and I am certainly attached to particular "things" more than others.  I'm sure from the outside it looks highly absurd, irrational and time consuming! And it is, but so are many other past times, hobbies, etc in this life.

So I'm either going to need to figure it out, work with it, instead of against it or find something to take it's place.

2.  Working with each memory or past issue is time consuming, but well worth it.  If I want my life to be different, I must do something different or how will it change?

3.  I am starting to see a little tiny light, like a pin hole in a childhood that feels as though it's been erased.  When I ask my brother about it, he remembers even less, so I'm on my own.

Anyone else out there missing parts of their childhood?  What can one do to remember it?  I'm all ears over here.

Not My Childhood Kanzashi! The Destiny of Things, Story 154

Not My Childhood Kanzashi!  The Destiny of Things, Story 154

I am conflicted, confused, indecisive to the max and feel like splitting in two!

photo via Hoarder Rehab

On the one hand I know it's ridiculous to feel so deeply attached to my things and on another can't help it yet, so why try and deny it, fight the thought or belittle myself for it?  I just surrender and accept it.

Just because the facts add up doesn't mean it's the truth!  So I suppose in many ways getting down to the bottom of my hoard is my search for some kind of truth about myself which mainly seems to be about my elusive childhood!

Okay, so this is how the story goes.....

I've had my childhood kanzashi and obi listed for over a year now, I've been given several offers, but just couldn't let go of it and finally had resigned to letting the listing run out and to keep them and some how use them in my art.

And yesterday my kanzashi sold!  I have never felt so much panic over one of my things selling!  I was nerve wrecked wondering where it was going and I had no idea!

So I immediately wrote:

Hi!

I just noticed that my childhood zanzashi has been ordered by you! Thank you! However as a recovering hoarder, I am hoping you will provide me with a "behind the purchase" story to help me let it go more easily.

I had resigned myself to keeping it, since it's been listed for so long with my childhood obi, that I didn't think neither of them were leaving any time soon and was just waiting for the listing to run out to use in my art and now I'm in shock, at least I know my zanzashi is not going to far away and staying the same state!

Any information is helpful and I thank you for your time in this matter!

Kindest regards,

And I got a reply with a huge twist!

The person gave me a choice!  It can either be part of a costume design in a Madame Butterfly opera or she understands if I want to keep it!

She thought it was particularly unique and beautiful, but would totally understand if I can't part with it and said it would be an extremely difficult piece to part with!

Where does such kindness and empathy come from? and am I to sit on the fence forever?  Can I just wait for one of my shoes to drop to decide?

So it seems that my hoard habits have moved from beyond finding new lives and homes for them and have turned into something else!  But what is that "something else?"  I am so confused right now!  I am hoping that writing about it will get me out of this endless back and forth ping pong game!

 photo via Hoarder Rehab

One part of me wants this person to breath new life into it since she can see the same unique beauty as my Grandmother who gave it to me did too, yet the other half knows that it's been mine for over 40 years and I'll never be able to get it back once I let it go.

How often do I meet a complete stranger and see eye to eye?  This person sees the same value and beauty in this piece as I do and I'm making myself feel crazy because she would also allow me to change my mind or is it change of heart? and keep it or let it go to a new life and home?

In the beginning I wanted someone to breath new life into my kanzashi and some where along the way it changed to I am going to breath new life into it, but now someone else can too.  Has my thinking changed since much of my hoard is gone and I can think more clearly? or am I still holding on to my hoarding ways?

What does this kanzashi really symbolize for me?  It is my Rosebud from Citizen Kane?  It's certainly not the memory or the words I want to be relating to on my death bed! or is it?

I often ask myself during a crisis if I'm going to remember this or that in 6 months to a year? And if I answer, "yes" I ask myself if I'm going to remember this on my death bed and the answer so far has been, "no"

 photo via Hoarder Rehab

Saying Goodbye:  How will I say goodbye to my kanzashi?  I have a few hours to mull over it, perhaps sleep on it.

What I Learned:

1. Now my new questions to myself are, why wait til the listing expires? Is it because I have too much hoard to think about in this manner?  Is it because I was hoping someone important would come along and breath new life into it as it just has?  Is it because I can't think of a way to use them?  Am I being stubborn about letting my hoard go to no end? Is this my "fear of missing out" coming out to play? or what? what? what? and more importantly, why?

2.  I am a slow reactor decision maker type person.  I've been walking around in a shocked stupor, since I found it it sold and then again when the person offered to let me keep it anyway and now that I have to be the one to decide...  my hoarder recovery state feels so unstable!

And it's basically taken me one day to recover from the anxiety of indecision to be calm enough to make a decision.  How funny does that sound?

3.  I have bigger more pressing crisis decisions to make, one I can't talk about it because I'm not supposed to, another that's been culminating for over six months and I can finally make a decision or wait longer and let it stew for up to two more years.  Two more need attention by the end of this week and another is on the back burner until August, but I need to start preparing now because it's such a thorn in my paw!

And guess what they all have in common?  They are all legal issues!

3.  Out of all my present crisis causing problems, I don't think I'll remember a single one in six months to a year and geez, if that's what I end up thinking about on my death bed... well, then I'm already a lost cause..... but the kanzashi.... now that still remains a mystery!

There's something still locked up deep within it, but what is it?  And I'm wondering, will it's story or memory appear if I let it go to be in the Madame Butterfly opera or should I breath new life into it myself and let some part of my forgotten past meet up with my present some how?

My heart tells me one thing and my mind says another and my gutt isn't giving me any peace over any of it.  And if I think about some of my heros, Ghandi and other spirituals and what they'd do, well the answer is so simple.

"Say When" Shot Glass Jigger: The Destiny of Things, Story 153

"Say When" Shot Glass Jigger:  The Destiny of Things, Story 153

All gone now.....

I used to have a super sized shot glass collection, mostly novelties and the old heavy kind I could slide down a counter!  I gave them to an old college friend with my wine and martini glass collection when he finally got his own apartment.  The one who would take me to the Firefly that I wrote about here because his Mom gave me the cameo as a travel souvenir!

I bought this set because not only was it a deal, but when my friends came over for shots this is what they automatically reached for when I only had a huge shot collection, but they'd use this "one"  and they'd take turns.  The "Say When" conversation was basically the same too... Pig, donkey, gentlemen or ladies!  No rabbits allowed!

Soon after I bought this set, I became bed ridden sick and gave up alcohol and along with it went all my drinking friends.  I didn't know how many drinking buddies I had until I became sick.

So I have my first original Say When jigger, which is slightly different from these and use it for liquid measure, usually for something more healthy like, wheat grass juice or any recipe that's in ounces.

When I first started selling on Hoarder Rehab them I couldn't find any on to compare prices, so I sold them high, however know there's many of them.

I didn't even dawn on me that these were jiggers, but was reminded by many Etsy readers that they were not "shot glasses" but "jiggers!"  So I finally added "jigger" to the description and tags, but under "shop stats" and "keywords" found that most views came from "shot glass."

They sat around for a long time, but as a recovering hoarder I'm in no hurry to let my stuff go, so many months later we took different photos of them and listed them on VintageToGoEasy.  They also sold faster on VintageToGoEasy, but who really knows why....

I think photos do make a difference when selling online, however, which photo is going to sell something is a different story.  The photo below is the one that sold these jiggers:

They also sold better as "shot glass" over "jigger" tags.  Either way,  I am happy to say we are "sold out" and out of the four I received four stories!

The first one went as a replacement for a broken one that crashed to the floor.  I could rehash and vent about this story upon request! haha...

The second one to went to a friend who's Aunt they'd go visit and had one just like it!  Read it here!

The third one went as a stocking stuffer

and the last one went to an Etsy buyer looking for a unique shot glass for a shot glass collector!

Saying Goodbye:  I am in gratitude that all four found separate better lives because I have no use for them anymore and was only keeping them because I like the way they look and think they are funny!

What I Learned:

1.  The silver lining to my bed ridden illness are many, but from this story I can take away that I don't need to drink with drinking buddies and the illness weeded out my friends towards better health.

2.  As an Etsy shop seller, I learned a lot about tagging, photos and the advantages of having four shops.  And what's that saying?  "Thing are not always what they seem..."

If I sold these as jiggers only, I might still have them...but from "shop status" and "keywords" I know I got many more views from shot glass instead!

Thank you Etsy buyers from both shops, Hoarder Rehab and VintageToGoEasy for letting me know their destiny and for taking part in my Hoarder Rehab in such big way.  I appreciate the insight your stories have given mine!

Fortune Teller Miracle Fish by Cathryn Hankla: The Destiny of Things, Story 152

Fortune Teller Miracle Fish by Cathryn Hankla:  The Destiny of Things, Story 152

An Etsy buyer sent a unique story with an interesting twist!  Remember these?

photo via The Destiny of Things, Fortune Teller Miracle Fish available here

Others must love these as much as I do, not only from the memories they bring with them from days long past, but because I have gotten five stories from Etsy buyers about these Fortune Teller Miracle Fish!

It's never dawned on me that these are so old they might be considered extinct for some, especially the younger generation.  And I get reminded plenty about my age just from my own body, but I've heard all the best bands live! or so I've been told.

Anyways, here's the email I received many moons ago!

Hi,

I only just opened the small paper envelope you sent along with my order of 10 Fortune Teller Miracle Fish. Thank you for the 11th fish, the penny, and the numerous other ephemera. I was so busy when I received the order that I set the envelope aside for later. Here are my thoughts:

You asked, how will I use the miracle fish?

I am a student at a university in central New York, an old returning student I should add, slowly working my way to a Bachelor's degree. My classmates are younger than my children at this point, it's been so long a process. I take one class per semester as an employee of the university.

This semester I took a senior writing workshop and our textbooks included a book of short stories by Cathryn Hankla called "Fortune Teller Miracle Fish." Of course, I knew what the title referred to. Miracle Fish were a novelty I recall from my childhood in Los Angeles, where I grew up, way back in the 1960s. I bought the Miracle Fish to give to my young classmates. They were surprised to see that it exists in real life, not just in the short story by the same name. (By the way, if you enjoy short stories, I recommend Hakla's.)

My visit to your several etsy shops left me pining for Los Angeles and those times when I was a free spirit. I was an art major when I was young, and I collected oddities and vintage items of all kinds thinking I would use them in a collage or still life, or simply as decor. But I never had the space, and more specifically the money to maintain my habit.

The Fish lifted it's head indicating I am jealous, but it's probably just picking up my melancholy. I can't be in two places at once, and here is better for me -- I, too, can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Your shops are delightful and I will check in often to see what other memories you will conjure with your collections.

Thanks for your inspiration.

Set the Fortune Teller Miracle Fish in your hand and it's movement will indicate an emotion, like  mood rings from back in the day, but these are older.  Photo via The Destiny of Things, available here.

I am so happy someone read my note that I slip into each order with mostly fortune teller ephemera because each time I fill a glassine envelope, it reminds me of my dehoarding into a future unknown because I've never known a life without hoard!

It is also a Japanese tradition for a shop keeper to give an omiyage as souvenir "thank you" to each patron.

And the penny is symbolism for....

I have some negative stories about these that I would vent and even rant and rave about! but those are another story!

Anyways, this story has been on my list to write for so long, but I've procrastinated on finding Hankla's book of short stories and by the time I went through four library obstacles, I finally got it last week!

Fortune Teller Miracle Fish by Cathryn Hankla via public library

And it's one of the best short stories books I've read since the 90s!  The last good book I remember reading was "Their Eye Were Watching God" by Hurston that I picked up at a Las Vegas book store for a dollar, so I figured if it wasn't good I could just donate it and feel no loss.

I read the first paragraph of Hurston's book and was sold!  Here it is:

"Ships at a distance have every man's wish on board.  For some they come in with the tide. For others they sail forever on the horizon, never out of sight, never landing until the Watcher turns his eyes away in resignation, his dreams mocked away by Time.  That is the life of men.

Now, women forget all those things they don't want to remember and remember everything they don't want to forget.  The dream is the truth.  Then they act and do things accordingly."

Okay, so I had to share the second paragraph too, but in that book store I only read the first paragraph, headed straight for the cash register to read outside!

I have no idea what other miracles had to happen that day for me to connect with that good book in Las Vegas, but I did find two stylish comfortable pairs shoes in size 5 that day too!  Which if you wear a size 5 shoe, you'll know what's it's like to try and find a pair, let alone stylish and comfortable!

photo via The Destiny of Things, Fortune Teller Miracle Fish available here

Now from Hankla's book:  here are some lines for reasons unknown that bring tears to my eyes or give me goosebumps or catch my eye or just plain make me happy when I read them:

From Fortune Teller Miracle Fish, Stories by Cathryn Hankla, pg. 177-178:

"Of course no rules have been spoken because to speak their fears of betrayal would be to acknowledge their relationship in ways they never will.  But that changes nothing, nothing, but the terms of Michelle's despair, perhaps it does not even change that.  If anything, the silence makes everything seem worse, because Michelle has not really been betrayed, because she has not been promised anything."

This is an old habit from college.  Not only was I a huge note taker in each of my classes, but I often took note of anything that I just "plain" loved or even just liked.

Here's more:

Outlaws pg. 124

"Snakeman watches the black car flee.  Fear rises in him.  He has seen how things can turn from bad to worse without much transition, how folks can change your life by what they say:  truth the first victim with reputation quickly following.  It shouldn't work that way, but it does.  What would people say if they really knew?"

Talk about hitting home!  I've always wondered about that saying, "sticks and stones make break my bones, but words will never hurt me!"  I don't think that's always stands true, no matter how many times my Mother said it for me and I tried to believe it!

I could go on forever, but here's the last one:

Dog Days, pg 138

"For a second she felt nothing, but it was a big nothing that felt more like something...as though she stumbled over the root of herself..."

Anyways, I had to share the glories of short story writing and let people out there know it's "not dead" or at least not dead to me anymore! Thanks to an Etsy buyer who sent me an email and for a public library having it to check out!

Maybe, just maybe it'll inspire someone besides me to read or write again!

photo via The Destiny of Things, Fortune Teller Miracle Fish available here

Saying Goodbye:  This is one of my best goodbyes ever!  I am so excited about what I've gained from this Etsy buyer's email I'm besides myself and up in the clouds happy!

What I Learned:

1.  I used to have a huge book collection from my childhood to every book I had in college and I had many different majors, so as hoarder that's a whole lot of books!  Plus I've liked reading the dictionary since I was kid and had one in every room, in case I felt like reading one.

I moved once with all my books and my Aunt and her two friends were in disbelief after they helped me pack up all my books!  So much so that by my second move, I donated them all, but I wish I hadn't.  I had tons of books from Black Swallow when they were publishing Bukowski and Fante, etc and coffee table books.

I had Banana Yoshimoto's Kitchen, the whole series of Amistead Maupin and Delacorta, all of Raymond Carver, Bukowski, and Fante and of course all the classics from American Literature, which I donated on my second move to lighten my load due to my Aunt's friend having back problems from helping me.

And now it's been so long I can reread them again and see if I still love them! until someone informs me of other short story books!  I haven't splurged on "The Best American Short Stories" since Stephen King was the selector, so I can read those again too!

What was the last short story you read that left a huge imprint on your life?  Mine is the entire Hankla collection of stories, so far!  I only have two left to read and when I first got the book, I read 4 of the short stories without stopping to look at the clock once!

I don't like to read stuff out of order either, but I had to read "Fortune Teller Miracle Fish" first to write this posting!  (It's the last story) Now I'm trying to read one a day to savor each one and take notes.  I'm sure I'll read it twice!

I might even buy the book, so I can just underline all my favorite passages and write in the margins!  As a recovering hoarder, I'll have to think about it since my book hoard is still large, especially in the vintage origami book department! but that's another story!

Pencil Flag, Chore Chart and Behavior Reward Chart Stickers: The Destiny of Things, Story #151

Pencil Flag, Chore Chart and Behavior Reward Chart Stickers:  The Destiny of Things, Story #151

A repeat customer turned friend or etsy shop owner turned friend or friend turned repeat buyer?

photo via Hoarder Rehab, pencil sticker flags, available here

It's Etsy shop owner turned friend and then she bought "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark" and emailed me her story with tons of photos! (Read the story, here) and then repeat buyer, however now she's a long lost friend!  She's quite busy now with her Grandkids and using all these reward stickers to get them off computer, video games and TV!

It must have worked because I haven't heard from her since the holidays, so she must be busy with the boys now that they are off the computer, video games, etc and must be playing and doing all kinds of other alternative activities, like pretending all things great and small in the tree house her husband built for them!

Here's her email with her plan of attack!

Good Day Ms. Kitty Kat,

Hope your going strong! I'd like to order 2 sheets of these stickers. I'm going to be using them as a reward system for my 6 and 8 year old grandsons. I wish I had your "teacher brain" I want them to earn rewards before they can play on their computer games.

I'm worried about the eldest boy especially, he will stay on his pad for hours, and then moan and complain when he's not allowed.

I'm sure this is a rampant problem due to the electronic world we live in. I need to order something else sticker wise. I'll send you a message from there. Thanks for being such a great shop owner and a wonderful BFF in California.

Ali

P.S. I got the idea from your blog when you described how you were using the stickers to keep your dehoarding on track. Great idea ..(.there's no rush on delivery so take your time)

(I got the idea that she got from me from an Etsy buyer.  Read about the story, here.)

She didn't need my help one bit and it must have worked because the last time I heard from her she said:

Hi Dear,

The reward card is working well, it's fun because Grandma gets to make the rules and the boys don't seem to mind that! I've only had them over night once, so when they were up for a while I gave them stickers for things they had done with out even knowing, like playing outside, eating their breakfast, not fighting with each other, and they were so eager to fill their index cards. I'll tell you more about it later!

XO
Ali

She bought two sheets of these, but I think she's a natural teacher and probably only needed one.  I'm so happy that's she and her grandkids are off doing activities together and making memories rather than  being isolated with electronic gadgets.

As an inner city teacher, I used behavior charts in many different ways in the classroom, but the one I remember the most is when we used it for "NO TV WEEK" which if you are a teacher happens in April or at least it used to be, but I used "NO TV WEEK" before it became a National April happening,

I used to do "NO TV WEEK" anytime, especially when I found out my students were watching late night shows, like Arsenio Hall and when ever it got in the way of homework, like doing homework before school with breakfast and morning cartoons because it got in the way of the afternoon shows, like the Power Rangers and Ninja Turtles!

We made it a big event and I started to have them keep detailed records and logs of their TV watching.  Usually time started, time ended, duration or time spent, titles of the shows and a short review of the show and guess what?  Many of them admitted to not liking what they were watching!

This went on until they got tired of keeping records, but I'd start a month ahead of when we pledged to stop watching TV for a week to get them used to the idea without panic! I have I got some stories to tell about their TV watching habits!

Anyways, I do have books about No TV and it's a great history lesson of how society spent their time before TV was invented and it's a great lesson that can be used through the curriculum.

I taught third grade so it was could reinforce or introduce time, especially minutes, hours, analog and standard.  Group oral lessons and debates on certain shows or cartoons using summary, evaluation reviews from the point of view of entertainment, educational, informational, etc. value.  It has countless lessons in reading and writing!  I even let them read the TV Guide as homework!  Any teachers out there remember theme teaching?

Remember TV Guides?  Are they extinct now? What about "theme" teaching?  Cell phones and computers were just becoming household affordables, so I think towards the end of my teaching career we started calling it "NO SCREEN WEEK"

 photo via ebay

Anyways, the grand finale preparation was giving everyone a packet of post its or sticky notes and on it we wrote as many of the tv alternatives we could think of and placed them all over our TV screens until it was yellow full of them!

When anyone was tempted to watch tv, they'd just find a pre-written alternative sticky note on the tv and try one out and we logged and recorded those too!

I had everyone sign their own pledge too and a class one because we were all in this together, yet separate. and it looked very official with a gold notary star sticker with ribbon and signed with everyone's John Hancock!

In the end, a few stopped watching TV for better endeavors, but many if not all cut down on their TV viewing.  I'm not sure how many more spent it on homework, but their alternatives to TV were a positive choice in the right direction.

And me?  Well, they were all shocked that I didn't even own a TV and back then hadn't owned one for over 10 years!  And when students visited, it was the first thing they went searching for!  HA!

Saying Goodbye:  These stickers were easy to let go, but it's because I have tons of stickers still.  And many of my teacher tools, toys, learning realia, etc has been a difficult process, but I am ever evolving about it and it is getting better, even if I do go backwards at times.

What I Learned:

1.  I like the idea that ideas are being passed around on this blog and are turning into bigger and different ideas!

Like how an Etsy buyer bought stickers to motivate herself with her chore chart and I used her ideas as a way to track how much time I spend dehoarding the music art room in my planner and then how Ali used the basic idea to get her boys doing other activities, besides electronic entertainment or passing time.

2.  I do miss teaching "NO TV WEEK," but by the time I retired I hadn't used that lesson in years!  I had to sneak in a very short version of it.  Which reminds me of another popular "theme" lesson I had with students, I called, "Baby Eggs."  Students adopted a baby egg for a week and took care of it like their own....but that's a whole other story....

How much TV do you watch? Which shows are your favorite?  and one movie? and past favorite shows?  I don't own a TV, but I do watch movies and shows.  Netflix was one of my best friends when I was bedridden for a year!

I have a lot of favorite shows now, Hannibal, Mad Men, Walking Dead, Homeland, Orange is the New Black, Orphan Black, Boardwalk Empire and Treme to name a few off the top of my head!  and my last favorite movie was Mud.  Maybe it's time I keep a log of my own screen time!  Anyone out there want to join me?

When I was sick my favorite shows were Deadwood, The Wire, Life (where I got Hoarder Rehab's shop quote) and Stargate Universe where I got the name for our third shop, The Destiny of Things.  Listen to Dr. Nicholas Rush on utube here.

Thank you Ali of HeyAlleyCat, for returning to my shops to buy more of my hoard, sharing your story and using it in such a productive and fun way!  Check out her shop, HeyAlleyCat for decor. like my favorite 20s tin boxes from her Grandmother, here, American style Western 60s Year of the Horse porcelain here and Donald Duck Disney toy, here!

Thank you Etsy for sending me some kind and positive buyers who leave their stories and become my friends as well!  As a recovering hoarder, it's such a comforting reassuring relief to know what has happened to one or many of my cherished items!

Yes, I cherish stickers and actually have a collection that is vintage by now and can't decide to part or keep them!

Thank you US, China, Slovenia, Poland, Germany and France for you visits since Monday and joining me in my  HoarderRehab and The Destiny of Things!

Our Lady of Guadalupe and Mermaid Drink Markers: The Destiny of Things, Story #150

Our Lady of Guadalupe and Mermaid Drink Markers:  The Destiny of Things, Story #150

I've been collecting Our Lady of Guadalupe since the 80s!

photo via JunkDrawerLoveEtsy, available in blue here or red here

Since writing and collecting these stories and memories, as a recovering hoarder, one of the first patterns that emerged before me is how my collections morphed into other collections until they were far removed into something distinctly different!

For instance, my Mexican Folk Art collection, soon spread to collecting Religious Mexican Folk Art and from there it went on to it's a Small World scale until I had an International Religious Folk Art collection and when that got too big, I went on to collect religious medals from Mexico, Philippines, Russia, France and Italy, until it's final morph was moveable sterling and gold charms that began with Bibles that opened

It finally ended into a culmination when I made some of my own Milagro crosses (see Lover's cross here and Garden Milagro here) and International Religious Folk Art ( see here, here and here) and moved on to a completely different art form, applique quilting!  However, that might have been a morph too and I just haven't made the connections!

A kind soul emailed me a story which of course, reminded me of my own!  Thank you!

Here is her email:

Thanks for my stuff! I'm not so much into day of the dead, but my daughter is turning 5 this month and we're having a mermaid party. I just like saint things. I've also been collecting weird crocheted things, very useful things, like bike seat covers, plastic bag holders, and a christmas dress for my dish soap. Have you heard of Miranda July? You remind me of her. She wrote a book about all the people she met when answering ads from the penny saver. She's weird, but I'm a big fan. She makes movies too. Sorry I couldn't figure out how to give feedback. Is there an app for that? Lol. Have a nice holiday!

I hadn't read her email since the first time in early December and surprisingly didn't even remember how she collects weird crochet items too!

Here's what I wrote back:

Hello!

I've been trying to catch up on my blog stories and I finally found yours again! Thank you so much!

I'm not into Day of the Dead either and when I started collecting it in the 80s, my Mom asked if I had turned Catholic! lol, none of the Catholics in our family have what I collected!

I told her I just love Mexican Folk art, which turned into Religious Folk ARt until finally, I was collecting Saint stuff! So you can see why I couldn't pass up the Guadalupe vase candle holder! What other Saint stuff is in your collection?

I'd love to see your weird crochet stuff because I used to collect and save that stuff too! I had several handmade crochet dolls that held toilet paper rolls under their dresses.... gifts from students, towels with a crochet dress top that hang over a kitchen cabinet knob another gift from a student, several purses made from crochet grocery bags that my aunt knew how to take a part as one continuous piece and told me they were water proof for my bathing suits. This was all back in the 80s and 90s.

I hope your daughters 5th birthday went well and she loved her mermaid party!

I've never heard of Miranda July, but will look her up later! Thank you for the compliment!

No worries about feedback, I'd much rather have a story!

What are you collecting now? Sorry, this is so long!

Kind regards,

I even had a toilet paper holder crochet clown hat with a bee and wilted daisy bending from it's rim!  It was a landmark from my Grandmother's bathroom and had been there since I was a kid.  I was going to make it all into an art shrine commemorating my retirement with every gift a student gave me with and extension or ode to extinct classic toilet paper holders covers from the past, however, my retirement was bittersweet due teacher's not getting paid for six months and not going on strike, so I donated the whole room of students gifts from decades and the corner of extinct extra toilet paper covers I had collected through the years.

Saying Goodbye:  I wish I could plan ahead and know what I'm going to need for an art project, but I rarely do and seem to need an abundance before I can start it.

For example, these la sirena mermaid cocktail charm drink markers are for little loteria card shrines I used to make back in the day because now I want to make art that's more interchangeable, so I collected them in many colors, including neon and guess which color works best with the little shrines?

RED!  and guess how many red la sirena mermaid charms I have in my collection of over 100?  TWO!

So I have a a couple shoe boxes of these cocktail drink holders in many different animal figurines and mermaids!

The good news is that my hoard is getting organized enough and my projects are either stored in drawers or boxes now, so my tie dye card supplies are all in a box and all my tapes are stored in a drawer, etc.  My quilting takes up several boxes, but at least they aren't strewn about and mixed in with other art projects!

Also over 560 hoarded items have found new lives and homes since I've started to dehoard on Etsy and I think I'm half way through it all, but as a recovering hoarder, space and item quantities are disproportional because what I see and what mr oz sees are two different things, until he shows me a photo of it!

So it may be time to take photos of that room, since I think we can use it soon as a music art room, instead of it storing rows and rows of boxed hoard to the ceilings around three full walls!

What I Learned:

1.  I still have enough collections and boxed art projects to last me a life time, perhaps two life times!

2.  That I can not continue to hoard in the name of "art" supplies because it takes too much time to shop and all the supplies clutter my mind as they turn into the "million" art projects I want to begin and then I have difficulties deciding which ones to begin and when to begin them.....

3.  Window shopping takes time, "real" shopping takes time, shopping around for the best buys even more so, finding a place and putting away the shopped items takes me a long time.  Dehoarding and organizing hoard takes time and so does the whole process of dehoarding through Etsy. photos, listing, packaging, shipping, emails, cross marketing, etc takes time.   And of course, I know this, but sometimes by the end of the day I wonder where the day went!

And before I know it, a week has passed and then it's a new month!  Some thing has got to give and it has to be "shopping" in every form!"

How do you manage your time efficiently?  Anyone out there recommend any helpful books about it?  Please share your success story!

Thank you Etsy buyer from JunkDrawerLoveEtsy for your email story.  I am grateful to you for all it's brought me and I am determined to give up shopping in almost every form: on line browsing, wish lists, comparables, even window shopping to see new trends.  I wonder how much time I'll save?

I say give up "almost" every form of shopping because we still need to grocery shop and I am already thinking about how I need a paper cutter!  Okay, so I won't shop outside of groceries for a week and see how it goes.

Thank you Etsy for getting me this far with dehoarding, it really feels like quite the accomplishment to get over 560 items new lives and homes!
